James Street’s Chic New Tequileria Serves Up Lobster Tacos And Sustainable Cocktails
Hands on
James Street is certainly no stranger to a phenomenal dining experience – whether it be slurping up pasta at Biànca or sipping award-winning wines on the balcony at The Lodge. And now, Brisbane’s luxury strip is adding a fiesta flair to the mix with its latest addition. Introducing Carmen Tequileria.
This 80-seater Mexican bar and restaurant serves as an architecturally designed oasis, taking inspiration from Tulum in distinctive curved archways, whitewashed walls, and neutral tones. While green might not be featuring on the Carmen colour palette, it’s embraced in their ethos as they combine elevated fare with a dedication to sustainability across all their practices.
Boasting small batch artisanal mezcals alongside a large selection of tequila and agave-based spirits, Carmen certainly fits the brief of a tequileria. Its minimal waste cocktail menu features hand-crafted signature drinks as well as a premium wine list to pair with the menu of fresh and sustainably sourced seafood.
From poached lobster tacos to kingfish ceviche, and Sydney rock oysters, Carmen’s signature dishes also include beef short rib rendang and Mexican woodfired cauliflower. Of course, icons of the cuisine will also make an appearance, such as guacamole, Mexican haloumi, and charred corn rillettes, plus an irresistible Mexican-inspired ice cream topped with Carmen’s secret crumb.

Carmen’s is the latest venture from Potentia Solutions Leisure aka the group sprucing up the Brisbane dining scene with Soko, Lina Rooftop, and the recently announced Claw. With its lounge atmosphere, carefully curated menu, and convenient location under Sage Hotel, Carmen is in good company to make its mark.
Carmen Tequileria is set to open this July.
