Best Undressed: This Is How To Style And Shop The Sheer Trend

Sheer excellence

Let me be transparent: I love sheer. It’s one of the more daring fashion trends of recent memory, but sheer clothes have been around for decades. Who can forget Kate Moss’ iconic 90s naked dress moment? Or Cher’s feathery translucent look at the 1974 Met Gala? And, of course, J-Lo’s see-through jungle-print Versace dress which created such a stir that it inspired the invention of Google Images. Yep, sheer has been creeping its way into the spotlight for quite some time and I have been lapping it up for years now.

Flash-forward to the present day: from global runways to our Instagram feeds, the trend has shown no signs of slowing down. One of the top trends we spotted at Australian Fashion Week, we’re not just talking about tastefully see-through dresses and tops anymore, the barely-there look has made its way to pants and skirts as well. Endorsed by the likes of influencers, celebrities, and designers, it’s not hard to see why sheer clothing is still reigning supreme.

As an enthusiastic supporter of the sheer fashion movement (free the nip!), I am elated to find that the hundred and one sheer tops I’ve accrued over my years of shopping are still deemed fashionable in the eyes of society. IMBO (in my biased opinion), sheer has surpassed mere trend status, joining the ranks of timeless classics like furs, snakeskin and leopard print. It’s in good company, no?

Ready to try it for yourself? Shop my top picks below and show some skin!

Sheer Dresses

For the bold, why not bare all and opt for high-waisted briefs and a lacy bralette underneath a sheer dress? A foolproof outfit formula for those looking to make a statement, this is the perfect option for a night out.

Sheer Skirts

Again, the high-waisted briefs look goes perfectly underneath sheer skirts. And when paired with a simple tee or long sleeve – *chef’s kiss*.

Sheer Pants

Skirts over pants may scream early 2000s, but when those pants are sheer, the look is totally elevated. However, if that era still haunts you (understandably), sheer pants with a blazer on top creates an effortlessly chic and sophisticated ensemble.

Sheer Tops

If you’re leaning towards a more modest approach but still want to experiment with the trend, try layering a slip dress over a long-sleeved sheer top. A great way to incorporate some interest and texture into your outfits, it’s more pared-back while still being stylish, and even works in an office environment. Otherwise, go all out and free that nip, girl!
