Haute Or Not? The Fashion Trends To Know Before They’re Everywhere

New year, new style

By Teagan Witherow | 20th February 2024

It’s shaping up to be yet another year of fabulous fashion, with trends already gaining traction thanks to red-carpet looks and the latest runway shows flooding our feeds.

As we head further into the year, chances are it’s going to be filled with experimental ensembles, colour crazes, and outrageous celeb statements. While it’s hard to imagine anything topping Kylie Jenner’s lion-headed chest piece at the Schiaparelli Haute Couture show, 2024 is already gearing up to give last year a run for its money.

Looking back on the fashion scene of 2023, we saw everything from giant headphones to boxer shorts and ballet flats to maxi skirts, with larger trends like Scandi-chic and Barbiecore also capturing our attention. Now, as we look into the crystal ball of fashion trends, let’s see what’s in store for 2024.

GIRLCORE

What’s a fashion prediction without a blast from the past, right? The girlcore trend is forcing us to think way back to our childhood. You know the days when you would dress up in princess dresses and raid your mother’s makeup stash for a touch of (poorly applied) lippy?

Don’t be fooled though, we aren’t anticipating grown adults to start wearing princess dresses and tiaras, rather this trend is more about reclaiming those traditionally hyper-feminine and youthful styles with a modern twist. Think lace, pink hues, flirty skirts, ballet flats (find our faves here) and yes, ribbons galore.

PREPPY

Next in 2024’s fashion hitlist is preppy style, and while Polo Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger may have paved the way many moons ago, this time around, it’s all about giving preppiness a fresh take.

Forget the knee-high socks and tennis skirts of yesteryear. In 2024, preppy style gets a sleek and androgynous makeover, elevating it to new heights of sophistication. Think country club chic with no clichés.

To pull off this trend without looking like you just stepped off an American university campus, reach for oversized blazers, classic v-neck sweaters, tailored mini skirts, and chunky cable knits.

NON-BASIC BASICS

We can all agree that being called ‘basic’ is just about the worst insult in the world of fashion, but this might not be the case for much longer. Non-basic basics are shaking up the status quo and are making us rethink the way we look at staples. Finally, under the radar, classic styles are having the moment they deserve.

What is a non-basic basic, you ask? It’s a new take on an old classic. Take, for example, a simple singlet and add a touch of intrigue to it by making it asymmetrical with a cut-out on the side (shoutout to the genius minds at St. Agni which are a personal fave). Need a hand with styling your basics? Find our top tips here.

XL BAGS

Move over miniature baguette bags, there’s a new style in town and it’s the oversized shopper bag. Forget stuffing your personals into a teensy micro pouch, we’re noticing consumers are craving comfort, functionality, and versatility this year. So, it’s no wonder that XL bags are stealing the spotlight!

Embrace the mantra “bigger is better” with roomy totes, effortless slouch bags, and material satchels. Check out a few of our favourite hobo bags here.

SLIM PANTS

Ladies and gentlemen brace yourselves because the moment you have been avoiding with every fibre of your stylish being has arrived – the resurgence of the skinny jean. Sorry Gen Zers but baggy trousers are soooo 2023.

Don’t believe us? Take a cue from the likes of Kendall Jenner and Emily Ratajkowski, who have been spotted sporting the polarising silhouette. If you’re not quite ready to part with your beloved baggy pants (don’t worry, neither are we), dip your toes into the trend by embracing tailored pants or barrel-leg jeans.
