This Grand Bangalow Estate Is Part-Tuscan Villa, Part-Argentinian Horse Stud

rural reverie

While on a sabbatical in Spain, spouses Emma and Tom Lane found themselves asking: how do you recreate the escapist feeling of being on holiday, but at home? Their answer was The Range Estates – a collection of thoughtfully designed properties rooted in the idea that where you live should feel like somewhere you never want to leave.

Their first project, The Farm Byron Bay – a regenerative farm home to a collection of micro-businesses and Three Blue Ducks – launched in 2015 and set the tone for everything that followed, encapsulating The Range Estates’ philosophy of slow, intentional living and a respect for the land.

The vision for Copperstone

That ethos carries through to Copperstone. Down a long, winding driveway in the township of Bangalow is where you’ll find it, a part-Tuscan villa, part-Argentinian horse stud boasting a dedicated dressage arena and stables. The residence, which began as a plot of land to build horse stables for their daughters and unfolded into one of their most beautiful homes to date, was influenced by Reschio Hotel in Umbria – a centuries-old estate home to restored horse stables. The thread running through the entirety of Copperstone is unmistakably equine, expressed through collected horse-inspired vintage prints, memorabilia, and a corten steel sculpture created by Emma’s friend, artist Dominique Sutton, that sits in the front garden.

“With my background in building brands, I can’t help but create a theme around something,” says Emma. “And there’s something so regal about looking out and seeing horses in the paddocks.”

The estate sprawls across 48 acres and is made up of a spacious five-bedroom homestead and a two-bedroom manager’s cottage, alongside a generous collection of recreational facilities including horse stables, a dressage arena, a pool house and 25-metre mineral pool, a tennis court, and a sauna and steam room. It’s a property that insists you slow down and relax, and gives you every reason to do exactly that. Boredom, it appears, will not be an issue here.

The colour palette and finer details

The palette is drawn directly from the surrounding environment – warm, rustic tones of pink, brown, terracotta, and ecru – as are the materials, which, where possible, have been sourced from the land. It’s an approach that gives Copperstone a sense of rootedness, as though the house has always been here. In each room sits a handmade piece, crafted by a local artisan from old timber he had collected over the years. The result is a seamless integration of indoors and out.

“We wanted the house to have a softness,” says Emma. “The timber floors, the rendered walls – it was a beautiful consistency of those materials working together.”

While the estate is grounded in nature, there are moments of grandeur that shine through. The master bedroom, for example, will lead you through an arched doorway and into a luxurious ensuite bathroom. Working with a stone company that travelled to Italy to source materials, they returned with 15 slabs of pink travertine, resulting in a decadent, floor-to-ceiling wash of marbled blush and rose tones. It’s an unexpected flourish that feels entirely at home within the broader warmth of the property.

The expansive, open-plan kitchen was something Emma had long dreamed of, anchored by a wood-fired oven that acts as the heart of the home and a representation of what Copperstone was always made for: connection, sharing, and loved ones coming together over a meal.

Despite the deeply personal nature of the project, designed with their own daughters in mind, Emma has always approached her work with a universal mindset. “I always design from my heart for my family,” she says, “and then hope people walk in and see their own families there.”
