In Conversation with Creative Director of Sarah & Sebastian
In the world of fine jewellery, few brands capture both the imagination and the heart quite like Sarah & Sebastian. Founded by creative duo Sarah Munro and Robert Sebastian Grynkofki, this Australian label has redefined what it means to blend artistry with ethics. Known for its unique, handcrafted designs and commitment to responsibly sourced materials, Sarah & Sebastian has become an international favourite for those seeking beauty with a conscience.
We sat down with Sarah Munro to uncover the story behind the brand, her creative inspirations, and what’s next for Sarah & Sebastian. Growing up on Australia’s picturesque South Coast, Sarah’s love for the ocean is deeply woven into her work, influencing everything from the brand’s aesthetic to its dedication to ocean conservation. Here, Sarah shares a glimpse into her life, her design philosophy, and the values that drive her vision forward.

Could you tell us a bit about your background and how it’s influenced your work?
I grew up near Wollongong on the South Coast, and the beach has always been a big part of my life. My love for the ocean is reflected in so many of our designs—it’s something I try to bring into the brand at every level, from the aesthetic to our conservation efforts.
What inspired you to launch Sarah & Sebastian?
I’ve always been drawn to design and making things with my hands. I studied design at university, and when I couldn’t find jewellery that truly resonated with me, I started making my own pieces. With my co-founder Robert, we created unique designs that quickly caught on with others looking for something different.
Describe a typical day. How do you balance it all?
I like to start my day early with a swim at Clovelly Beach. Then, it’s off to the office to meet with our design team, work on upcoming campaigns, and connect with our broader team and CEO. Evenings are for unwinding. I love cooking dinner with my husband and relaxing after a busy day.
What’s your approach to maintaining work-life balance?
I’ve come to value balance, and I try to infuse this into our company culture. Weekends are for exploration, often along the Australian coastline. Swimming and diving allow me to reset and gain fresh inspiration for my work.
Do you have a favourite piece from your collection?
Emeralds are my favourite gemstone, and currently, I’m drawn to the Encrustacea pieces from our Pillar Collection. They’re a personal favourite and reflect our love for organic forms and natural beauty.
What guiding principles do you hold close in your work?|
Trust your instincts, be adaptable and grow with purpose. These values help keep us aligned with our goals and true to our vision.
How do you manage the balance between your stores and the e-commerce platform?
Robert and I are still deeply involved in the daily operations, but we have an amazing team overseeing our stores across NSW, VIC, QLD, and WA. Our retail spaces offer an experience beyond shopping; they’re crafted to tell our story, while our online store connects us with clients worldwide.

What led you to introduce piercings and soldered bracelets in-store?
Expanding our services was a natural step for us. We wanted to create immersive experiences, offering customers more than just jewellery. Our piercing service, with 18-karat gold and platinum pieces, provides a luxurious option, while the Soldered experience celebrates craftsmanship by using a jeweller’s torch for each piece.
What’s been the most surprising challenge you’ve faced?
Running a business is full of unexpected challenges, but I’ve learned to embrace them. Often, challenges can open doors to new opportunities if approached with an open mind.
Was there a moment you felt the brand had truly “made it”?
Our 10th anniversary was a defining moment. Bringing on a CEO and committing to ocean conservation with a million-dollar pledge marked a new chapter for us. It was a proud milestone, and a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come.
