10 Ways to Make Money at Brisbane Markets

Make it rain!

Ready to set up your stall? Need a few tips to ensure you make money at Brisbane markets? Here are 10 ideas to help:

1. MEND EVERYTHING

If you’re selling your preloved clothes, make sure they look good as new. You may have to use those high school home economics sewing skills. Sew those buttons on and fix any rips or holes! Also, dry-clean anything that doesn’t smell fresh. No one wants to smell like the bottom of your clothing pile.

2. KNOW YOUR STUFF

Create a list of what you will be selling on the day so you can keep track of your items as they fly out of the door (well, stall). This will also help with any customer questions.

3. MAKE SURE YOUR STALL STANDS OUT

There are going to be stalls everywhere, and you can’t afford to fade into the background. Communicate your store vibe clearly and effectively with your set-up so people will want to see more of what you have to offer.

4. CATEGORISE AND TIDY YOUR MERCHANDISE

A messy rack or unorganised table can make customers feel like they’re wasting time sorting through a pile of the unknown. Sort your items into types (t-shirts, jumpers, dresses, etc.) or by price point. Just keep it TIDY.

5. MIRROR, MIRROR IN YOUR STALL

There’s only so much a camera phone can do. Buying at a market stall without a mirror is a gamble most customers won’t be willing to take! Clear away any doubts and let people check themselves out in your gear.

6. BRING A FITTING ROOM

Not enough market stalls adopt this element! It can be as simple as pegging together long pieces of fabric and hanging them from your stall. Get creative!

7. MAKE EVERYONE FEEL WELCOME

Make your store feel inviting enough that people don’t want to run off the moment you look away. Keep up a friendly, genuine attitude with every person strolling by or checking out your stuff. Plants always make a space feel more cosy. Try some botany to bring in those extra paying customers.

8. STYLE YOUR CUSTOMERS

Give every customer a personal experience. Show them how to wear different pieces and make them their own. These extra tips will have people picking up what you are putting down.

9. BE FLEXIBLE

Be open to changing your prices as the day goes on. You could even have 20 minutes during which all of one area is $5. Everybody loves a bargain, and you’ll be clearing stock in no time. Just remember to start with prices a little higher than what you’re hoping for so the discount doesn’t hit you too hard.

10. HAVE MULTIPLE PAYMENT OPTIONS

Customers having to run to an ATM to get cash out might be the difference between someone buying from you or from the stall next door. Investigate easy EFTPOS options to keep your customers happy.
