The Best Campervans For A Road Trip

The Sunshine State is calling your name

By Guest Styler | 8th September 2020

With COVID-19 restricting international travel, Queenslanders have hit the roads to travel domestically and within their own states, as caravan rental platform Camplify reports a 120% increase in winter camping holidays compared to last year, making 2020 without a doubt the year of the road trip.

When local travel restrictions were lifted in Queensland, bookings increased by 140% in June, accounting for almost a third of Camplify bookings across Australia. As confidence returned, more and more campers started trips in vans with between 50-100% growth week-on-week, all the way until school holidays started where it hit its peak. Demand surged with lots of people booking last minute trips for August, and Camplify are seeing record demand for school holiday and summer bookings already!

For some road trip inspiration for your next getaway we’ve pulled together the coolest and most unique vans around Queensland.

Dolce Sole Camper | Burleigh Heads

A custom vintage interior design by digital creators Tegan and Ned this yellow Fiat Ducato has a simple and sleek appearance on the outside and explodes with Italian charm and character on the inside. Heavily inspired by the colours and decor of the beautiful Amalfi Coast, this tall spacious layout has a warm homely feel to it and a height you can comfortably walk around in without having to crouch.

The Slow Lane | Mooloolaba

For fans of living life in the slow lane, this 2013 Toyota Coaster fits that bill perfectly. It’s one of the most unique vans you’ll see too: The Slow Lane is a custom-built motorhome fitted inside a Coaster bus and decked out with quality furnishings and fittings. A coffee machine, barbecue, stereo, fridge and freezer are just a few of the many amenities.

Cosy Campers | Yeronga

The owners of this unique campervan reckon it’ll make you “the talk of the tents”. And they’re right, because this converted Mercedes Benz is a beauty, fitted inside as a handcrafted, reclaimed timber cabin with a queen-sized sleeping space. The van runs completely off grid, powered by solar panels, and is comfy all year round as it comes with full insulation and a fan.

Vanderlust (Matilda) | Coolangatta

Get your wanderlust vibe on with Matilda, a purpose-built campervan in a 2017 Renault Master. Like all Vanderlust vans, Matilda has been scrupulously built, tried and tested by Mark and his team for road trips and adventures in comfortable surroundings – you won’t find vans like this elsewhere. Among the many additions are a rooftop platform, a hot water outdoor shower, a Nutribullet and a slide-out barbecue.

Velma | Morayfield

Due to her distinctive orange and cream exterior, Velma’s uniqueness is evident even before stepping inside. Overall, she’s what her owners call a “unique 70s babe”, blending a retro feel with modern luxury. This fully updated 1978 Viscount Explorer has a four-ring stove, an oversize fridge, aircon, a separate seating/dining area and even satellite TV.

Drifters (Hendrix) | Coolum Beach

Part of the Drifters stable of custom-built campervans, Hendrix is an automatic 2015 Toyota Hiace for road trips and adventures. He comes with a host of features unusual or unique in any two-berth campervan, including hotel-quality bedding, a mini bookshelf, cards and games, Bluetooth speaker and an Aeropress coffee maker. Hendrix also has a lockable safe, outdoor furniture and a reversing camera.

Bilbo | Brisbane

Bilbo’s better than hobbit sized – he’s a lovingly restored and completely self-sufficient vintage campervan ideal for free camping. That’s unique free camping in luxury style, as Bilbo’s features include a queen-size mattress, duck-down pillows and doona, 22-inch HDTV, Bluetooth speaker, games console, board games and a fully equipped kitchen. Best of all, the van also has an Outdoor Glind hot water shower with ensuite tent – simply drive for ten minutes to have hot water for your shower.

Mojud | Bilinga

Would you like your road trip to be in a converted 1970s Mercedes bus? If so, check out Mojud, a uniquely converted Mercedes O309D for 70s-style adventures in an 18-feet vehicle. Mojud sleeps two and has a large queen-size bed as well as an indoor and outdoor kitchen, stereo and fridge.

Omeo | Brisbane

This 2007 Toyota Hiace is packed with unique features, from its gorgeous interior to its huge range of luxuries. Among many other facilities, Omeo has a Nutribullet and a French press, indoor and outdoor kitchens, a fridge freezer, a premium quality foam mattress and reading lights with USB. The owners are easygoing about distances and bookings too: Omeo offers one-way trips along the Eastern Coast from any major city between Melbourne and Cairns and has flexible pick-up and drop-off times. Better still, discounts apply for longer trips.

The Sprinter | Rangeville

Owner Paul calls The Sprinter “the ultimate campervan”, fitted out with luxury amenities but designed to look like a cargo van for easy free or urban stealth camping – now that’s unique. We also love the fab features of this converted 2015 Mercedes Sprinter, including full insulation, heating, full-size kitchen sink, plenty of socket and charging points, and a permanently fixed queen-size bed with memory foam mattress.

These unique vans are all available to book now. If you’d like to explore more of your local neighbourhood vans to hire, check out Camplify’s Queensland campervans, caravans and motorhomes here.
