Heading To Melbourne? This Is The Place to Stay

Planning a trip down south? Fitzroy is the place to be for good food, fine wine, and all-around good vibes.

Think of it as Melbourne’s answer to Williamsburg or Shoreditch, where streets are alive with vibrant street art, vintage markets, and a plethora of delicious dining options. The moment I stepped out of the Uber, I could feel the creative energy around me, no wonder the area attracts the artsy types. Whether you’re after good coffee, browsing quirky shops, wandering through galleries, or winding down with a glass of wine, Fitzroy really has it all.

After a few flight delays (thanks, Jetstar), I checked into The StandardX, the first hotel from The Standard Group to open in Australia. The exterior blends seamlessly with its urban surroundings, marked only by a bold red door hinting at the stylish interior within. Stepping inside, the atmosphere was cosy and inviting, with a dimly lit lobby adorned with lush greenery and comfy seating—clearly a space meant for relaxation.

Once checked in, I took a peek at The BOX, a well-stocked bodega (how very NYC) with a curated mix of daily essentials, snacks, and even vintage film cameras. Naturally, I had to pick up some hotel merch—because I can resist a little souvenir.

I headed up the lift to check into my room, which was effortlessly modern, featuring a massive, comfy bed with the softest sheets. I must admit, I’m all about a solo trip where I can spread out in the bed and sleep in for as long as I want. The refined yet chic decor showcased the eccentric energy of the hotel, with subtle touches of texture, and bold pops of colour, complete with SMEG appliances, and branded robes, making it perfect for a weekend getaway.

After settling in, I headed downstairs to BANG for lunch, the hotel’s Thai restaurant inspired by street food, focusing on fresh, local produce with a sustainable approach. As a vegetarian, I asked the team for recommendations and started with the vegetarian and truffle dumplings, which set the bar high. I also tried the fried eggplant and a seafood yellow curry (minus the seafood) which was next-level good. Being a self-confessed cocktail connoisseur, I couldn’t resist trying a few. The Business As Yuzual and Khun-pa were just superb to enjoy with my meal. I couldn’t fault my experience at BANG—the service was impeccable, and the food was bursting with fabulous flavours. Even though I was dining solo, one lovely waitress offered to play Insta-boyfriend and snap photos of me enjoying my cocktail in the restaurant lounge (thanks, sis!), which is pure aesthetic, by the way.

Fitzroy really comes to life at night. My friend met me at the hotel, and we kicked off the night at Punters Bar on Brunswick Street. The vibes were high, with live music and people enjoying a drink after work. After a few more pubs and drinks later, we ended up on the rooftop of Naked For Satan, a popular spot for a reason, thanks to the city views and perfect setting for a yap over a glass of red. We rounded off the night with a shared margarita pizza—let’s be honest, late-night carbs after drinking are a must, even if I regretted it the next day.

The next morning, I made sure to sleep in and enjoy my mini staycation before jumping out of bed to head to Lune Croissanterie, a legendary bakery just a three-minute walk from the hotel. I joined the queue, and after a short wait, walked away with a box of pastries, both sweet and savoury and a Melbourne-quality-coffee, that were absolutely worth the wait. I returned to the rooftop at The StandardX to enjoy my treaties and coffee while soaking in the views of the city and the lively markets below.

If you’re into thrifting and vintage finds like myself, Fitzroy is a haven. I spent the afternoon exploring the local markets, a dream for vintage lovers. My first stop was the Rose Street Artisan Market, right next to the hotel, where I found a belt made from recycled can tops—how Fitzroy of me. I then made my way to Fitzroy Market, buzzing with good music and hidden gems, where everyone was rummaging through racks trying t0 find their owns treasures.

I also hit up Lost & Found Market on Brunswick Street. I’d been there before but was completely overwhelmed by all the amazing finds, definitely need more time to explore when I go back. I wandered up and down Gertrude Street, grabbed an iced oat matcha from Gabriel Fitzroy because it was hot outside, and popped into a cool bookshop. I’d also found Top Floor Gallery in Collingwood on TikTok, so I trekked it there and I manage to snag a vintage Coach shoulder bag for only $200. I can’t forget to mention SWOP, I’ve been to others around the world before, but this one was a curated, pre-loved wardrobe dream that was stocked to the brim with designer finds like from GUCCI belts, Prada bags, Jacquemus everything, and I spotted Rick Owens, Off-White, and Lado Bokuchava on the racks—all in top condition, looking like they’d barely been worn. Note to self, come armed with an empty suitcase next time.

So, to wrap things up, Fitzroy really nails it with it’s amazing coffee shops, independent boutiques, galleries, wine bars, vintage finds and classic pubs. Blending coffee, creativity, culture, and food, there’s just something special about this place that keeps me coming back for more. From local markets to those tucked-away bars, every corner has a new surprise waiting. My time at The StandardX was a perfect fit for the neighbourhood’s quirky charm. If you’re after a getaway that’s got personality and a bit of flair, Fitzroy is definitely the spot you’ll want to be.
