Get Cheeky with It: Moxy Sydney Redefines Airport Stays

In the world of posh hotels, Marriott Bonvoy’s got the big names like The Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott and W Hotels, but it’s the quirky Moxy that’s causing a stir in Sydney. Right by Sydney Airport, Moxy Sydney Airport is Marriott Bonvoy’s first Moxy in Australia, mixing comfort with a dash of cheekiness for those on the go.

I recently checked in to Moxy for three days of meetings in Sydney. I’ve known Moxy’s General Manager Michelle Scott for several years, from her time with Marriott in Brisbane, and her launch of Westin Brisbane. So, I was keen to check in to her new hotel.

Moxy is cool, very cool. The vibe is playful and fun, a refreshing change from the usual hotel scene. As Michelle told me (over pasta and Pommery), “I feel she’s the wild child of the group, and we love that.” Michelle would know, having nurtured that ‘child’ from hard-hat stage, through fitout, to launch.

The hotel has tapped into the history and nostalgia of the area for design inspiration. It blends industrial and art-deco styles. Industrial in the wrought iron beams, exposed ceiling ducts, and shipping container elevators. Nostalgic with its stunning art-deco marble bar, retro decor (think, Togo sofas and arcade games) and fluro light installations. The theme carries through to the art-deco bathroom decor and old-school rotary dial phone in your room. Every inch of Moxy has been considered.

But back to business – Moxy has various meeting spaces offering different vibes and clever changeable configurations to suit your needs. If it’s inspiration you seek, my fave is the light-filled Arthouse space with its soaring ceiling and oversized artwork.

Moxy’s all about making life easy for travellers – with air travel’s inherent unpredictability, to have a base just minutes from the terminals offers a peace of mind that is invaluable, especially for those flying international.

I stayed in the Queen Sleeper Room, where the Queen bed cocooned me in luxurious high-thread count bedding, like a soft cloud. The highlight? The city view was perfect for sunrise and sunset moments. This luxe double room offers a private bathroom with free toiletries, a walk-in shower, and a hairdryer. Plus, enjoy the comforts of air conditioning, a cosy seating area with a flat-screen TV, with YouTube and Netflix casting capability.

Beyond its prime location, Moxy is geared to the needs of modern travellers. The cleverly designed multi-functional public space is ideal for those who want to get out of their room and work in a more social setting. Every aspect of Moxy’s design has been considered with the guest experience in mind. Additionally, practical conveniences such as laundry facilities, a 24/7 Grab-n-Go snack shop, and gym means you have everything right there.

When you’re travelling, time is precious, and convenience is key. That’s why airport hotels like Moxy are such a hit. Plus, Moxy understands the rhythm of travellers. Recently awarded “New Build Hotel of the Year” and the “Paul Davis Australasia-Pacific Hotel of the Year” at the Design Inn Symposium, Moxy proves it’s not just a place to stay but a destination in itself, where the adventure begins before you even board your flight.
