Egypt is a trending destination for good reason – the North African nation ticks all the boxes for every type of traveller. If you are looking for a life-changing travel experience peppered with breathtaking history, iconic Instagrammable backdrops and stimulating stories of ancient mysteries, then put Cairo and a cruise down the Nile on your bucket list.
As a travel agent with 20 years of experience, these are my insider tips on where to go, what to see, and where to eat and shop in Egypt.
Where to go
The Pyramids of Giza
The most iconic structures in the world, the Pyramids of Giza sit on the outskirts of the city of Cairo. Many believe they hold deep secrets and untold stories. They absolutely give the perfect Insta-worthy pics with brightly coloured camels strolling past and the bluest of blue skies as your backdrop. Giza is one of the most visited monuments in the world and somewhere you need to see first-hand to believe. You can enter the pyramids via steep ladders or just sit and take it all in at the base of the Grand Pyramid. It’s helpful to be prepared with the knowledge that one morning spent at the Pyramids of Giza will likely spark a new obsession (like mine) that will require you to re-subscribe to Netflix to devour the never-ending supply of documentaries on the true purpose of those perfectly symmetrical giant mounds of stone. It really is fascinating stuff and honestly the best spot for a photo shoot.
Cairo
Located on the banks of the Nile River, Cairo is one of the fascinating cities you need to visit at least once in your life. Cairo is home to 10 million people and juxtaposes Coptic Christian churches alongside Mosques. I recommend you stay close to the Nile for the view and the breeze. Plus dedicate an afternoon to the cool air con of the Ancient Civilisation Museum where you can get up close and personal with 20 royal mummies including Egypt’s favourite Queen – Hatshepsut – who is said to have died 3,000 years ago. You can still count her toes and see her 3,000-year-old hair! A visit to Cairo wouldn’t be complete without haggling in the enchanting chaos of Khan El Khalili Bazaar.
The Grand Egyptian Museum
Located 2km from the Grand Pyramid is the brand-spanking new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). This incredible new museum has just opened to the public. The Grand Hall and Main Galleries are now open to the public and feature 50,000+ precious Egyptian artifacts and lots of stuff never seen by the public before. It’s brand new and we can’t wait to be among the first to see it!
Luxor
Next, hop over to Luxor, the world’s greatest open-air museum. From the Valley of the Kings to Karnak Temple, it’s like stepping into an epic historical movie.
Sharm El Sheikh & Hurghada
For the beach bums, the beaches of Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada are pure paradise. Think turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, and sun-soaked relaxation. Snorkel during the day and dance under the stars at night.
Mount Sinai
If you’re up for a spiritual journey, hiking Mount Sinai is a must. Catch the sunrise at the summit—it’s a moment you’ll remember forever. Plus, the climb means you’ve earned your post-hike treat!
What to eat
Local delights
Egyptian cuisine is a fiesta of flavours. Have a go at Koshari (a carb lover’s dream), feast on ful medames and indulge in baklava for dessert.
Nile dining cruises
Enjoy gourmet dining with live traditional music as you float on the Nile. It’s the perfect blend of romance and adventure.
Cafe culture
Don’t miss the cute cafes in Cairo. Sipping on aromatic Egyptian coffee or mint tea while soaking in the vibrant street life is pure bliss.
Where to shop
Gold jewellery, especially your name in hieroglyphics in your own Cartouche is a winner; perfumed oils and Egyptian cotton fabrics are the go-to in Egypt. Shopping is an experience and Egyptians are the most diligent salespeople on the planet! If you like something, then go for gold, but if you really don’t want to buy, just save your time and keep walking as you’ll never escape their grasp.
Khan El Khalili Bazaar
Shop till you drop at one of the oldest markets in Egypt. From sparkling jewellery to hand-painted ceramics and vibrant textiles, you’ll want one of everything.
Modern malls
For a sleeker shopping spree, Cairo’s modern malls like City Stars have high-end boutiques to quench your luxury thirst.
Local souvenirs
Pick up unique souvenirs like papyrus paintings, alabaster statues, or fragrant Egyptian perfumes. Every item holds a bit of Egypt’s magic—perfect for your home or as gifts.
