Fashion lovers, rejoice! Revered French Fashion Designer Jean Paul Gaultier, known for his unconventional approach to design, is about to bring his outrageous and fabulous theatrical production to Brisbane.

As part of the Brisbane Festival 2024 program, the one and only Jean Paul Gaultier’s dazzling Fashion Freak Show will combine fashion, performance, music, and pop culture. After its successful premiere in Paris in 2018, the production has played a handful of exclusive seasons in select cities like Milan and Barcelona – and now Brisbane.

The fashion extravaganza documents Gaultier’s exceptional 50-year career and celebrates his legacy, while paying homage to those who have inspired him along the way. Created, written, directed, and costume-designed by the icon himself, it’s a show that transcends boundaries and exceeds expectations. Showcasing more than 200 of Gaultier’s original couture pieces, soundtracked to disco, funk, rock, and punk hits, the show is essentially one grand party with a pumping playlist and breathtaking designs.

Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fashion Freak Show will also feature a couture piece from Queensland Indigenous designer Grace Lillian Lee, who was handpicked by Gaultier himself.

“I am pleased and honoured that my fashion Freak Show will be presented in Australia…I am especially pleased that you will see my collaboration with the Australian artist and designer Grace Lillian Lee,” Jean Paul Gaultier says.

“It’s the story of my life told through music and dance and fashion. The story of a boy from the suburbs who dreamed of being a couturier. Who lived his dream with all the highs and lows of his destiny.”

Running at South Bank Piazza from 30 August to 15 September, tickets to the theatrical spectacle are available for purchase here.
