8 Things To Do In The City That Won’t Break The Bank

high vibes, low prices

By Natalie McGowan | 27th February 2024

How many times have you texted the group chat to hang out and been met with replies like “can’t, too broke right now” or “I don’t get paid until Wednesday”? We’ve all been there. With the high cost of living, finding things to do that don’t break the bank can be tough. Fortunately for us Brisbanites, The City offers plenty of fun, cheap activities that anyone and everyone can enjoy.

From thrift markets to karaoke joints, here’s what to do and where to go in The City when your wallet says no but your heart says yes!

Second-hand shop ‘til you drop

You don’t have to dig into your savings for that new outfit! On every first and third Sunday of the month, Reddacliff Place plays host to the Suitcase Rummage, the iconic pre-loved market known for its low prices. With stall holders selling everything from shoes to books for as low as 50 cents, you’re bound to leave with some bargains.

Get on ya bike!

Delve into Brisbane’s rich history

The City is rich in experiences for lovers of all things culture. Perhaps you’re an art lover eager to explore the Public Art Trail, where you’ll find incredible contemporary pieces on display throughout the high-rises. Maybe you’d prefer to take a walk down memory lane (literally) and uncover the past with the Brisbane City Centre Heritage Place Trail. Or, get the best of both worlds at the Museum of Brisbane, where you can peruse the exhibitions and immerse yourself in the fashion, music, art, and history that define our beloved city.

Sing your heart out

If your idea of fun is belting out a Celine Dion tune with some mates, this fine city has a number of spots where you can do just that for a low price. Channel your inner popstar in the privacy of your own booth at Music City Karaoke or Strike Wintergarden. Or if a dive bar is more your scene, Fat Louie’s is the place to go!

Get serenaded

Prefer to leave the singing to a professional? Whether you’re seeking out a gig or happen to stumble upon the stage, City Sounds is a free, live music program hosting local, emerging bands and artists every week. Alternatively, you can escape the concrete jungle and soak up the sun at the City Botanic Gardens Gigs and Picnics. Every last Saturday of the month, the gardens come alive with free, live tunes. After all, they say the best things in life are free, and we tend to agree.

Support your local

Who says markets are strictly a weekend activity? Not us! The best hump day pick-me-up, the Brisbane City Markets brings together a medley of amazing local artisans, fresh produce, and delicious food stalls for you to explore. Ditch the leftovers and explore what’s on offer.
