Kita Alexander Shares The Party Songs Guaranteed To Get Her On The Dance Floor
You got me spinning
Hailing from Brisbane and now Byron Bay-based, ARIA-nominated singer-songwriter Kita Alexander is quickly becoming one of the names to watch in Australian pop. From featuring on FISHER’s hit track Atmosphere to opening for Dua Lipa on the Australia and New Zealand leg of the Radical Optimism tour, her star has been on a steady rise.
We caught up with Kita to talk about her journey so far, her night-out taboos, and the party playlist she swears will get anyone on the dance floor.
What kind of music did you grow up with? What was playing around the house when you were little?
Fleetwood Mac and Queen! On the way to school and blasting on the CD player at home.
When did you first realise music was something you wanted to pursue as a career?
When I got hit up at an open mic night to do some local pub gigs. I got stars in my eyes at the amount of money I could make as a 16-year-old by playing in the corners of restaurants.
How do you approach songwriting? And how do you balance storytelling and vulnerability while keeping your privacy?
Considering my privacy is a relatively new concept for me in my songwriting. I’ve always worn my heart on my sleeve, but now I’m realising that if I want to be playing shows for the rest of my life, then I really want to be intentional about what I put in my songs, especially if I’m going to sing them forever. It just takes a little bit more time in the studio to consider the lyrics and future Kita’s feelings.
How does fashion or personal style play into your artistry?
I’m having so much fun exploring that of late. How my music can be represented in what I wear and vice versa. I love wearing low-rise rise baggy jeans to the studio for ultimate comfort. It means I don’t have to consider being ladylike, I’m just comfortable and I’m purely focused on making honest music.
Do you have a go-to party outfit that always makes you feel confident?
I love a mini dress and some kitten heels. I get the legs out of those baggy jeans and feel on top of the world.
What’s a career moment that felt like a “pinch me” moment for you?
A pinch-me moment is when I see my kids in my crowd singing and dancing to my music or yelling “I love you mum” between songs.
In your opinion, what are the ingredients for the perfect party?
Good music, close friends, and no phones or cameras.
What are your top tips for throwing a good house party?
I haven’t thrown one yet, but I’m planning one for my 30th. My top tip would be to keep the dance floor small-ish, kinda cosy, so everyone’s on top of each other and not spread out.
Picture all the rooms and their vibes at a house party – where are you most likely to be found?
On the dance floor!
Wildest or most memorable party you’ve ever been to?
I have a few, but I recently went to a three-day birthday that only had our besties at a hotel in Palm Springs. I’ve never travelled for a birthday, so that was very memorable.
Any party faux pas or taboos that make you cringe?
My party taboo is having a limit on how messy I get. I like straddling the line, but as soon as I cross over, please, someone send me home.
