Brisbane’s Newest Luxury Arrival: InterContinental Is Coming to Town
Out with the old, in with the new
By Bianca Licina | 9th May 2025After saying goodbye to Brisbane’s Hilton Hotel after almost 40 years, the city’s been buzzing with anticipation – who’s moving in? Well, the wait is officially over, and we’ve got the scoop.
Say hello to InterContinental Brisbane – your new go-to for luxury stays, long lunches, and skyline views. Slated to open in late June, this world-class hotel and dining destination is set to breathe new life into the iconic Elizabeth Street address – and trust us, it’s worth the hype.
Primely positioned in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD and connected directly to the bustling Queen Street Mall, the property is steeped in architectural significance. It’s the only hotel in Australia designed by renowned Modernist architect Harry Seidler. Known for his bold, geometric lines and striking use of space, Seidler’s vision will be reimagined through a full transformation of the building over the next two years – all while keeping his architectural DNA intact.
And while the design pays homage to the past, the vision is firmly future-facing. InterContinental Brisbane will become part of a dynamic urban precinct developed by ISPT, seamlessly connecting the hotel with the Wintergarden retail centre and the iconic Regent Theatre. Think hospitality meets culture, shopping, and entertainment – all in one curated space.
So, what’s in store? A lot. Once complete, InterContinental Brisbane will unveil 321 beautifully appointed guest rooms, many with sweeping views across the city skyline. Guests and locals alike can look forward to four distinctive restaurants and bars, expansive conference and events spaces, and an elevated experience rooted in InterContinental’s signature hallmarks: cultural discovery, refined service, and global sophistication.
This is more than just a new name above the door – it’s a strategic play. As Cameron Burke, IHG’s Director of Development for Australasia & Pacific, puts it: “We knew it would take a special property to bring our iconic InterContinental brand to life in Brisbane. We’re proud to partner with ISPT to rejuvenate this incredible asset and create an indelible beacon of hospitality for the city.”
The timing couldn’t be better. Brisbane is entering what many are calling a “golden era”, fuelled by major infrastructure projects, rising tourism numbers, and the countdown to the 2032 Olympic Games. In other words, the city is hot – and getting hotter.
This opening marks Queensland’s third InterContinental property, joining the prestigious InterContinental Hayman Island and InterContinental Sanctuary Cove. It also signals a strong expansion of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ luxury & lifestyle portfolio, which now includes 21 operating properties and another five in the pipeline across Australasia.
For Tom Waters, Head of Development at ISPT, the project is about legacy as much as luxury. “We sought a brand that would epitomise luxury, honour the legacy of the building, and become a cornerstone of the vibrant precinct we’re developing.”
With its heritage roots, cultural reinvention, and world-class service, InterContinental Brisbane is ready to make its mark. Whether you’re staying the night, sipping cocktails with a view, or strolling through the revitalised precinct, this landmark is set to become a defining chapter in Brisbane’s story.
Keep your eyes peeled, InterContinental Brisbane opens mid-year, and it’s going to be big.
