Why The Right Fit Matters In Men’s Fashion (& How To Get It Right)

Hey boys, it’s time to sharpen your look, and we’ve got the secret. No, it’s not about your budget, how many clothes you own, or even your aesthetic; the devil lies in the fit. Choosing the right silhouette for your shape is not a plight reserved for women; selecting the right menswear is the way to stand out from the crowd and look instantly more put together. If the right fit isn’t finding you straight off the rack, tailoring is by far the simplest way to instantly elevate your everyday style.

One of the biggest misconceptions in menswear is that tailoring is reserved for bespoke suits. Where in reality, some of the most dramatic improvements can be made to everyday garments that most men already own. That’s why we’ve asked expert tailor Patrick Mackenzie to give us the tricks of the trade when it comes to tailoring your garments, from suit jackets to your old faithful jeans and tees.

So whether you’re a guy just looking to up his style game, or a supportive significant other, we are here to tell you that in the menswear department, size definitely matters, and here’s why:

Dress Shirts

The dress shirt is probably the most-worn item in your corporate closet. Well, Patrick says, “most men are wearing shirts that are one or two sizes too large through the waist. The result is excess fabric billowing around the midsection, which can make even a slim person appear larger than they are.”

The simple trick to make it all better? “A simple taper through the body can completely transform the silhouette. Suddenly, the shirt follows the natural shape of the wearer rather than hanging like a sail.”

Sleeve length is another detail that separates a good outfit from a great one. But don’t just take our word for it, Patrick says, “When a shirt cuff extends slightly beyond the jacket sleeve, it creates a sense of balance and polish that people notice, even if they can’t quite identify why.”

Suit Jackets

When choosing a suit jacket, the fit is truly a make-or-break situation. From the shoulders to the sleeve length, it’s all about intention and tailoring it to suit your shape. “If I could make one alteration to most off-the-rack jackets, it would be refining the waist. Many jackets are intentionally cut quite straight to fit as many body shapes as possible. The downside is that they often lack shape,” says Patrick.

When it comes to tailoring, it’s often subtle changes that go a long way. A perfectly tailored suit says to the world, “I care”, taking you from poorly presented to effortlessly polished, be it for your next business meeting or special occasion.

Patrick adds, “By introducing subtle waist suppression, a jacket can instantly appear more expensive. It creates a stronger shoulder-to-waist proportion, which is universally flattering and gives the wearer a more confident presence. What’s fascinating is that we’re often talking about adjustments of only a few centimetres. Small changes can completely alter how a person is perceived.” But if you want something truly tailored to you, go bespoke! Patrick is the master of made-to-measure suits exclusively designed for you using premium fabrics. Trust us, there is truly nothing like the feeling of putting on a piece that’s made for you (and only you).

Jeans

Were you ‘today-years-old’ when you learned you could alter jeans? You wouldn’t be the only one: Patrick has nearly a decade of experience in the industry and sees this response frequently. “Most people are surprised to learn that jeans can be tailored. They assume alterations are reserved for formal clothing, but denim is one of the garments that benefits most from refinement.”

Alternations to jeans can range from taking in the waistband to hemming, but Patrick’s top tip is as follows. “A tapered leg can modernise a pair of jeans immediately. The goal isn’t to make them skinny, but to create better proportions between the thigh, calf, and ankle.”

Dress Pants

Quite possibly the easiest menswear category where the fit can go wrong, we ask Patrick what the secret to the perfectly-fitting dress pants is. “Trouser length is one of the most overlooked details in menswear. A hem that is even slightly too long can make an entire outfit feel untidy.”

I know what you’re thinking: just how long is too long? Patrick has the answers: “The correct break creates a clean line from the waist to the shoe and gives the impression that everything has been considered.”

As for what’s trending right now, a slightly straight-leg silhouette is the move for suiting, whereas a wider-leg or barrel-leg is making for a relaxed shape in daywear dressing. “I often tell clients that great trousers shouldn’t draw attention to themselves. They should simply make the wearer look taller, cleaner, and more put-together.” You heard the man, don’t overthink it, because less is more.

T-Shirts

Are you the culprit of always buying a T-shirt that’s just a couple of sizes too big? Now is the time to sharpen your look. Patrick tells us, “The humble T-shirt is perhaps the garment that suffers most from poor fit. Many men buy a size larger than necessary because it feels comfortable, but excess fabric can quickly make an outfit appear sloppy.”

“Shortening the body, refining the sleeves, or slightly shaping the sides can elevate a basic T-shirt dramatically.”

“It’s one of the simplest examples of how tailoring works. The garment itself hasn’t changed, only the fit. Yet the wearer often looks leaner, sharper, and more confident.” My friends, that right there is the beauty of tailoring (I hope you’re taking notes).

Final thoughts

“The most stylish men in the world aren’t necessarily wearing the most expensive clothing. More often than not, they’re wearing clothing that fits exceptionally well.”

“Fit is the one aspect of menswear that every person notices, even subconsciously. You can spend thousands on luxury brands, but a well-fitted garment will almost always outperform an expensive garment that doesn’t fit.”
