A Brand Born from Grey
Graedance isn’t just a clever name—it’s a statement. Derived from the idea of “grey,” the brand embraces the in-between, the undefined, and the beautifully ambiguous. For Chen, grey isn’t a dull, lifeless hue; it’s a celebration of individuality and the nuanced spaces we occupy. “Grey represents the in-between,” Chen explains. “It’s neither warm nor cold, neither material nor spiritual, which aligns perfectly with our philosophy of embracing ambiguity and celebrating the unique gradients of individual experiences.”
Chen’s background as a QPOC (Queer Person of Colour) deeply influences this ethos. Growing up in spaces that often felt too rigid or narrow for his identity, he found solace in the idea of the “liminal”—those transitional spaces that aren’t easily defined. Graedance is his ode to self-expression, where jewellery becomes a canvas for individuality.
Jewellery That Grows with You
Graedance designs are more than just accessories; they’re future heirlooms, meant to evolve with the wearer. “Our designs reflect our ethos by embracing ambiguity and celebrating individuality,” says Chen. Take the ‘adapt-size’ rings, for example. These pieces aren’t just about looking good—they’re about feeling good, adapting to your body’s natural changes. Whether your fingers swell in the heat or shrink in the cold, Graedance’s pieces evolve with you.
Chen’s utilitarian approach, honed from his experience in menswear, brings a fresh perspective to jewellery design. The Firo Ring, for instance, can be worn in multiple ways, with a simple flip or turn. It’s jewellery with a twist—literally.
Sustainability at its Core
In an industry often criticised for its environmental impact, Graedance stands out with its commitment to sustainability. Chen is candid about the challenges, but his dedication to minimising Graedance’s environmental footprint is unwavering. “We’re aiming to be carbon neutral in our processes, and since precious metals are by nature recyclable, we’re hoping to be even more earth-conscious as we grow with time.”
Recycled metals and ethically sourced gemstones are the backbone of Graedance’s designs, giving new life to materials that might otherwise be discarded. This isn’t just about reducing waste; it’s about creating something beautiful and lasting, all while staying true to the brand’s ethos of adaptability and evolution.
The Creative Process
Chen’s design process is as unique as the pieces he creates. It starts with research and storytelling, often drawing on grand narratives from mythology or cultural motifs. Whether it’s the zodiac or ancient creation myths, these stories breathe life into each piece, adding layers of meaning that go beyond the surface.
But Chen’s inspiration isn’t confined to ancient lore—he’s equally influenced by a single painting or a day spent people-watching in Melbourne’s CBD. “The human interaction with design is undoubtedly integral,” he says. From sketching to prototyping, every piece undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it not only looks stunning but feels right, fitting seamlessly into the wearer’s life.
The Future of Graedance
So, what’s next for Graedance? Chen has big dreams, but he’s keeping some of them under wraps—for now. He teases an exciting collaboration with Chinatown Country Club that’s set to launch later this year. As for the long-term? Chen envisions Graedance expanding beyond jewellery, exploring new avenues like ready-to-wear, home décor, and accessories.
“I see us extending into spaces that remain powerful storytellers and platforms for expression,” he says, hinting at a future filled with endless possibilities. Whether it’s a footwear collaboration or a new line of home goods, one thing is certain—Chen’s vision for Graedance is as fluid and adaptable as the pieces he creates.
About the Designer
Graedance founder, Rong Chen
Before Graedance, Chen was a fashion nomad, co-directing the menswear brand AMXANDER and working on various projects across Southeast Asia. His transition into jewellery was sparked by a deeply personal moment during the COVID-19 pandemic—rediscovering a pair of dolphin earrings he had bought for his mother with his first paycheck. That sentimental spark led him to reevaluate his creative journey, ultimately guiding him to create Graedance.
Chen’s personal style is a blend of contemporary and classic, always with a focus on comfort and individuality. He’s inspired by the likes of Dries Van Noten and the resilience of friends and fellow designers who push the boundaries of creativity.
Embracing the Grey
In a world that often demands we choose sides, Graedance is a breath of fresh air. It’s a brand that celebrates the in-between, the grey areas where individuality and self-expression thrive. Rong Chen isn’t just designing jewellery; he’s creating pieces that tell stories, grow with you, and most importantly, make you feel seen.
So, the next time you’re in the market for a piece of jewellery, why not choose something that’s more than just an accessory? With Graedance, you’re not just buying a piece of metal—you’re investing in a narrative, a statement, and a celebration of everything that makes you, you.
