Here’s How You Should Spend Your Time At This Years’ Bleach* Festival

It’s the festival putting the Gold Coast on the international-art map.

By Sophie Venz | 18th April 2019

It’s the annual festival spanning all across the coastline each April, and this year Bleach* Festival is back with their most jam-packed program yet. The festival is one of Australia’s leading and most exciting contemporary arts programs, that aims to celebrate the city’s most dynamic and adventurous artists as well as renowned Australian and international collaborators.

Attracting more than 470,000 since the inaugural year in 2012, the program has grown exponentially to include artistic works across all genres; spanning from dance, theatre, installations, circus, comedy and everything in between. By utilising the Gold Coast’s world-famous natural landscape as its unconventional venue, Bleach* delivers an incredible art and cultural experience that provides a unique sense of place to both locals and visitors alike.

We’ve chosen some of our must-see art exhibitions and shows throughout over the festival:

Table Talk | Karma Collab Hub | 26 April | $30

Bleach* Festival and WOW, (Women of the World in Australia), join forces for a dynamic afternoon of questions, conversation, and networking. Using The Long Table format, the conversation will include a range of issues and challenges that face all women, but particularly those in the performing arts.

The event takes place at 3pm in the afternoon, in which a $30 ticket includes a drink on arrival and nibbles throughout the conversation.

Lano & Woodley | The Spiegeltent | 27 – 28 April | $53

Australia’s favourite comedy duo are soaring back to the Gold Coast with their high-anticipated reunion show, Fly. It has already wowed critics and fans alike, with stellar reviews and the People’s Choice Award at the 2018 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

They’re masters of childlike naivety, bringing to their show a universal appeal that’s enjoyable for an audience of all ages. This blockbuster show will not be one to miss during the festival, with Herald Sun even coining the two men the ‘our greatest virtuosos of comedy’.

Tectonic | Bleach* at Burleigh | 17 – 21 April | Free

Tectonic is a multi-layered event, with a highly physical contemporary dance spectacle and an interactive installation taking place all at once. The award-winning ensemble Dancenorth are the performers at play, displaying a dynamic examination of shifts; in land and sea, time and tide, space and thinking.

Tectonic aims to bring dance outside and into nature, which is why the event is outside at Burleigh to celebrate the glorious outfoot lifestyle that we know and adore here on the Gold Coast.

Limbo Unhinged | The Spiegeltent | 17 April – 12 May | $49 – $89

From the makers of the sold-out spectacle Blanc de Blanc is Limbo Unhinged, an intoxicating combination of cabaret, circus and acrobatics. It’s a celebration of otherworldly proportions, and is the show that invites audiences to delve deeper into the exhilarating party that is Limbo.

Directed by Scott Maidment, Limbo Unhinged whisks audience away with world-renowned circus performers into a hypnotic exploration of breathtaking acrobatics and jaw-dropping stunts.

Scribble Slam | Corner Young Street and Regent Lane | 26 – 27 April | Free

This two-day event sees a head-to-head battle of two artists each day, where they’ll each create their own artwork on a large wall with a 90-minute time limit. The artists involved are allowed to use whatever medium they prefer, however they will be completely unaware of what they’re painting until the countdown begins.

This element of mystery brings with it a sense of intensity, and the event has been a popular spectator-spectacle for the past four years with over 100 artists around Australia being involved in Scribble Slam!

The Cleaners | Bleach* at Burleigh | 26 – 28 April | Free

This art installation sits seven metres in the air, replicating a perfectly white and pristine living room. Two cleaners are also in the installation, and nothing is more important to them then maintaining the white rooms whiteness. Unfortunately, there’s also a giant slingshot and a large collection of mud-filled balloons on the ground below.

Participants are encouraged to partake in the sling-shotting affair, all-the-while watching the fights, meltdowns and existential crises that The Cleaners endure. Through physical theatre and performance, The Cleaners tell meaningful, thought-provoking stories to captivate their audience.

Montaigne | Bleach* at Burleigh | 28 April | Free

To signal the close of Bleach* Festival, 2019, you’re invited back to Burleigh Beach for one last event – the back-by-popular demand Sunday afternoon Bleach* at Burleigh, with some of Australia’s leading musicians playing well into the evening. For the final act of the afternoon is none other than one of Australia’s most outspoken and captivating lyricists’, Montaigne.

Head down to the beach to see the intoxicating star in all her glory and enjoy an Autumn evening with the sweet pop sounds lighting up the night.
