Burleigh’s Best-Kept Secret Opens Its Cellar Door

Spirited sanctuary

Like a hidden treasure chest waiting to be unlocked, Familiar Spirits Distillery is tucked away in Burleigh Heads’ industrial pocket — where you step in once and never want to leave. With handcrafted cocktails, an intimate atmosphere, and a warm, welcoming vibe, it’s a true game-changer for the Gold Coast’s bar scene.

Founded by husband-and-wife duo Lana and Justin Bell, Familiar Spirits started as a passion project and has quickly become a favourite among in-the-know locals. Their small-batch spirits — think Gin, Vodka, Limoncello, and Cane Spirit — are already making appearances in top restaurants and bars, but nothing beats experiencing them straight from the source.

“The name ‘Familiar Spirits’ isn’t just a play on words — it’s what we’re about,” says Justin, the distillery’s head honcho. “People walk in and immediately relax. It’s like they’ve found their spot.”

And what a spot it is. Designed by Lana, the space is all deep green hues, cosy seating, and warm lighting. A mix of refined tiki lounge and hidden oasis, it has just eight bar seats and four dining tables, making it an exclusive yet relaxed escape. Reservations are highly recommended.

Let’s talk drinks

Bar Manager Danson Danium is a master of the craft, shaking up cocktails that go beyond the expected. Whether it’s a bold Negroni with a Familiar Spirits twist or a tropical creation that transports you elsewhere, each sip is a revelation. The food is equally impressive. Lana’s sister, Bree Dittrich, curates a menu of refined small plates and indulgent desserts — like the Gentleman Pirate Rum-infused Tiramisu — that perfectly complement the spirits.

The cellar door is open for bottle purchases on Thursdays (10am to 5pm), while Fridays and Saturdays (12pm to 8pm) are all about the full experience. It’s the kind of place you stumble upon once and never stop talking about. Because some secrets are just too good not to share.
