Whether you’re yearning for your hair to grow back after an impulsive chop or are desperately trying to clear up a pimple in time for a major event, there’s no doubt we will try any piece of advice we can get our hands on. While some advice is totally out there, others you wouldn’t even think twice about. But are your beauty habits doing more harm than good? We’ve debunked 7 of the most common beauty myths to help you out.

1. Myth: Your hair will grow back faster if you get it cut regularly

This isn’t true. Your hair will grow at the same speed no matter what length it is or how often you cut it. Celebrity stylist Eugene Toye says, “I don’t think it makes hair grow faster. It looks cleaner because you are getting rid of the dead and dry ends. Hair can appear thicker and healthier.”  Although, make sure you do head to the salon at the first sight of split ends. This is essential to avoid it travelling up the hair shaft and causing further damage. The most important thing you can do? Look after your locks! For the ultimate nourishing treatment, we love Nak Ultimate Treatment.

2. Myth: You shouldn’t pluck above your eyebrows

If you have stray hairs above your brows, go ahead and pluck! But go overboard and you run the risk of looking like Nicole Ritchie, circa 2004. If you are stuck on what to pluck and what you shouldn’t, leave it to the pros. In the meantime, keep those pesky hairs in place with Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Clear Brow Gel.

3. Myth: Wearing makeup every day is bad for your skin because it doesn’t let your skin breathe

While being fresh-faced feels amazing, your skin doesn’t actually breathe, so wearing makeup every day isn’t an issue. Believe it or not, it is actually useful in creating a barrier against dirt and environmental pollutants in the air. The real problem is when your makeup isn’t removed properly at the end of the day. For the best way to remove makeup we recommend Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water.

4. Myth: White spots on your nails means you need more calcium

False. It has nothing to do with your calcium intake. Instead, the white spots are likely caused by mild trauma to the nail. As white spots are similar to bruises, all you can do is be patient and avoid biting, picking or over buffing.

5. Myth: Shaving will make your hair grow back thicker and faster

Although it may give the illusion that your hair is thicker and growing back faster, shaving doesn’t actually change your hair at all. When you shave, hair appears stubbly, dark and thick, only because the ends become blunt from the razor. Waxing, on the other hand, removes the hair from the root, which can leave your hair with finer texture over time.

6. Myth: Toothpaste can be used to treat pimples

Not really. While there are certain chemicals in toothpaste that will dry out your pimple, they are also likely to leave you inflamed and irritated. So, steer clear of toothpaste and stick to conventional cleansers and creams when it comes to banishing that blemish. We love Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion.

7. Myth: Exfoliating will dry out your skin

Exfoliating is essential for cleaning out your pores and removing dead skin cells but using an exfoliant every day is more than likely to dry out your face. Aim to exfoliate 2-3 times per week and opt for a gentle cleanser on alternate days. For dry and sensitive skin try Dermalogica’s Gentle Cream Exfoliant and for oily and combination skin we recommend Clinique’s Exfoliating Scrub.
