An Ode To Autumn Home Interiors

How does your home make you feel?

By Guest Styler | 2nd April 2020

Help! I’m new to this. Where do I start if I have never decorated before?

I think it’s really useful to start just by looking at magazines or Pinterest to expose yourself to imagery and designs. This is a really great way to warm up to what you like and see what you gravitate towards.

For me, I really like to think about a room from bottom to top, and usually start with the floors. A nice rug is a great place to start with any room! I then think about how to improve the light in, either by updating curtains and blinds or adding some nice lamps or pendants. You also can’t go wrong with a fresh coat of white paint, it’s the most inexpensive way to get that ‘just renovated’ feel.

What are some easy seasonal swaps that can make your home more autumnal?

During the cooler months I’m all about a room with lots of texture such as cushions, throws and rugs that are soft and make for a welcoming space. Swapping fresh flowers for beautiful dried grasses or cotton is a great update too!

If your home had a personality, what would it be and what type of homewares do you gravitate towards?

My style is really eclectic, and it’s all about mixing lots of different eras and styles so that the house feels really layered and lived in.

When looking for an investment piece for the hero of your room, what do you look for?

Big pieces of furniture are always statement making in a room, and for me they need to be really great quality and need to be adaptable so that they can evolve with your tastes.

How do you choose a colour palette that evokes a particular feeling?

Colours say so much about our design choices and our personality, so I like to choose mine carefully. I want my spaces to feel relaxed and cosy, so always choose neutrals with simple pops of colour along a similar palette.

What are some basic tips to style a bookcase?

For me, it’s all about choosing a colour palette that guides all the different item choices, and then layering up things together. I prefer to avoid symmetry and choose instead to cluster things in threes as well as making sure I pick things with varying heights. After you’ve had a go, it’s always worth taking a step make and moving things around.

What do you look for when styling an entry table of buffet?

Function and aesthetics! It’s so important to organise an entry table so that the space makes arriving and leaving your house simple and stress free. And at the same time, this space should show some of your personality and welcome you in the door. It’s a balancing act!
