It’s about that time of year again, the time when the mornings get cooler, our wardrobes become cosier, and our social appetites start craving something a little bit different from the same old coffee catch-up routine. And right on cue, a must-see solo art exhibition has arrived to reshape your usual James Street stroll (and the best part is, it’s completely free).
Nestled just off the coveted James Street precinct, Mitchell Fine Art is inviting locals to escape the inner-city hustle and step into the abstract, technicolour world of artist Odessa Mahony-de Vries. For just under two weeks, from May 5, be swept away by large-scale paintings and the kind of abstract expressionism that needs to be seen to be believed.
As if there weren’t enough reasons to tempt you with a visit, the exhibition is free, open to the public, and will be welcomed with a launch event on May 8 from 6PM– 8PM, offering a unique opportunity to meet the artist and experience the works firsthand.
This is your humble reminder to mix up your routine, immerse yourself in out-of-this-world art, and support the local artists shaping Brisbane’s creative landscape. Here’s everything you need to know about Odessa Mahony-de Vries’ Unbound exhibition.
About the artist
Sunshine Coast-based artist Odessa Mahony-de Vries is part of a new generation of Queensland creatives, redefining abstraction through physical, process-led practice. Already gaining national attention, she has been recognised as a finalist in both the 2025 Redland Art and the 2024 Stanthorpe Art Prize.
On her creative process, she says, “I’m interested in letting go of control… I want the work to surprise me – there’s a point where it starts to feel slightly out of my hands.”
Her works sit in a deliberate state of tension: controlled yet unpredictable. Rather than concealing earlier brushstrokes, she lets them remain visible, creating works where history is not erased, but embedded in her work, allowing each surface to hold the memory of its own making. And trust us, it’s even more moving in person.
Inside the Unbound exhibition
Presented by Mitchell Fine Art, a gallery known for backing emerging and contemporary Australian artists, Unbound marks a key point in Mahony-de Vries’ evolving practice – and her steady rise. Our two cents: consider this your opportunity to see the works before she goes global.
Expect striking oil paintings with daring brushstrokes, each with a surreal edge of its own. Drop in and see it for yourself – this one is best experienced up close.
