The Met Gala Is Almost Here: Everything You Need To Know In Preparation For Fashion’s Biggest Night

First Monday in May

By Victoria Lewis | 29th April 2025

It’s the fashion world’s night of nights — where anyone who’s anyone is there, and ‘dress to impress’ gets taken to a whole new level. That’s right, the Met Gala is upon us.

From mid-red-carpet outfit changes to full-on cat costumes and dresses that literally light up, there’s always a healthy dose of Met Gala mayhem tumbling down that famous staircase. Consider this your ultimate Met Gala cheat sheet — what to expect from this year’s theme, “Tailored for You,” plus our (slightly unhinged) predictions for 2025.

Whose party is it anyway?

Let’s not waste a second — here’s the what, where, and why. The Met Gala (aka the fashion world’s night of nights) always lands on the first Monday in May, which this year is May 5. Held at the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the event is technically a charity fundraiser for the Met’s Costume Institute and kicks off their annual fashion exhibition. But for fashion fanatics, it’s all about the red carpet. Designers from around the globe get the coveted invite, bringing their A-list, immaculately dressed guests — and honestly, it’s all anyone can talk about for days (if not weeks) after.

Hosted by the fabulous Anna Wintour, this year’s co-chairs are a suite of fashion powerhouse princes (and real studs) Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Colman Domingo, and honorary chair Lebron James.

What is the theme?

What’s a good party without a dress code? And if, by some miracle, you didn’t already know, every Met Gala has one. Each year, fashion fortunes and faux pas all hang on how well guests nail the theme.

This year’s exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, pays tribute to the enduring influence of Black Dandyism and the way Black culture has shaped — and continues to shape — men’s fashion. It’s only the second time in Met Gala history that menswear has taken centre stage, making this year’s event as historic as it is stylish.

So, in true Met Gala fashion, this year’s elusive dress code is Tailored for You — a cheeky nod to both custom styling and the menswear focus of the exhibit. With a theme this open-ended, celebs basically have the world as their runway. That said, we’re expecting to see plenty of power dressing, sharp tailoring, androgynous looks, shoulder pads that could rival a linebacker’s, and pantsuits galore (think finance-bro uniform, but make it couture). As someone who lives for a good blazer moment, I, for one, am very ready.

Who to look out for?

The Met Gala guest list is always a bit of a mystery, with speculation running wild. But one thing’s for sure — co-chair A$AP Rocky will be there, no shocker there. The real burning question? Will his wife, the reigning queen of the Met Gala herself, Rihanna, bless us with her presence?

And let’s not forget about the usual red-carpet royalty. Keep your eyes peeled for Zendaya, Gigi Hadid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tyla, Cardi B, and the list goes on. It’s sure to be a star-studded affair!

It’s a strict no-phone zone in the event itself, but we will no doubt we will be left with iconic iPhone bathroom selfie content to savour – who can forget that iconic 2017 Kylie Jenner & co mirror selfie?

Our (unhinged) 2025 predictions:

  • Best dressed – Emma Chamberlain, Elle Fanning, or Colman Domingo
  • Lady Gaga will have 3 outfit changes (minimum)
  • Katy Perry may arrive via rocket ship
  • Queen of the Met Gala Rihanna will gatecrash (a girl can dream)
  • Only 1/5 of the Kardashians will follow the theme
  • Kendrick Lamar will wear bellbottom suit pants

…but only time will tell.
