Why Brisbane Is Booking Hobart: The Dark Mofo Effect
AFTER HOURS
By Matilda Daniel | 2nd April 2026It’s no secret that Brisbane has been leaning into sunrise swims and slower mornings, but just a short flight south, the energy flips entirely. Suddenly, you’re trading SPF for late nights, chaos, and a lineup of seriously good music.
This grungy, dark festival takes experiences to the next level. Combining live music, art exhibitions, historic rituals, and food adventures, Dark Mofo is an event untouchable and definitely unmissable.
Running from June 11-22, and presented by Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Dark Mofo is no ordinary festival. It takes over Hobart in an immersive, atmospheric, and unapologetically bold celebration of art and culture. Think less of an “event” and more of a full-body experience… and one that Brisbane locals are increasingly booking flights for.
The 2026 lineup goes far beyond music
While the 2026 program continues to roll out, Dark Mofo is known for curating a mix of boundary-pushing international acts, cult favourites, and experimental performers you won’t find on the standard festival circuit.
Expect names like Princess Nokia, Sega Bodega, Danny Brown, Purity Ring, Dry Cleaning, Protomartyr, and The Black Angels.
What makes Mofo Darkness so iconic is that it’s not run as a strict hour-by-hour schedule. Instead, it’s a choose-your-own adventure across 12 days, with performances unfolding in warehouses, waterfront spaces, and hidden corners of the city, making every set feel like a discovery.
Hobart during Dark Mofo doesn’t feel like Australia as you know it. The city is washed in deep reds, soundtracked by distant music, and alive with energy despite the winter chill. It’s cinematic, slightly surreal, and completely immersive, a duality of indulgence and introspection that keeps people coming back year after year.
Arrive in the darkness
Your first stop? Dark Park and the city-wide installations. Across the waterfront and tucked-away laneways, projections and performances run continuously, designed for slow wandering and full immersion.
By night, ease into the festival energy with live sets from Princess Nokia, Sega Bodega, and Danny Brown, appearing across multiple venues.
But Dark Mofo goes far beyond music. The 2026 art program is already shaping up to be thought-provoking and visually striking, with highlights including SOLAS by Candela Capitan, and All the Fires Come Alive at the State Library and Archives of Tasmania.
Expect powerful live works too, including Regina José Galindo’s In Time of War, alongside pieces exploring themes of violence, borders, and human connection, designed to stay with you long after you leave.
And when the clock pushes past midnight, Night Mass takes over Dark Mofo’s after-hours playground of DJs, performance, and beautifully unhinged energy. From fire-lit processions like Ogoh-Ogoh to the festival’s famously daring Nude Solstice Swim, there’s a ritualistic edge that gives the chaos a deeper, almost spiritual feel.
The winter feast
Dark Mofo’s Winter Feast, held at Princess Wharf 1 and Salamanca Lawns, will feature Tasmanian produce, fire-cooked meals, and international collaborations. This experience includes guest chef Floriano Pellegrino, local artisan stalls, the “Night Mass” food labyrinth, and themed dining at Mona.
The perfect winter escape
Swapping Queensland warmth for Tasmania’s crisp air might sound counterintuitive, but that’s exactly the appeal. Dark Mofo gives you a reason to romanticise winter; with long coats, shared meals by firelight, and days that slowly fade into nights filled with art and live music you’ll talk about for months to come.
With Hobart’s thriving food and wine scene, the experience doesn’t stop at the festival gates. Between events, expect world-class dining, cosy bars, and just enough downtime to reset before diving back in. Dark Mofo is where it all culminates… Art, music, rituals, and nightlife collide into one unforgettable, after-dark experience. So, pack your layers, book your flights, and lean into the madness that is Mofo Darkness.
