One Night Only: Creative Icons Collide at The Calile
By Kiri Johnston | 21st July 2025A dreamstate is descending on James Street — and you’re invited to slip into its folds.
This August, Calile Culture returns with Cut From Movement, a one-night-only performance-meets-conversation that blurs the lines between choreography, fashion, and the art of the in-between. Held in the golden surrounds of The Calile Hotel’s Grand Reception and Amphitheatre, the event marks a dual milestone: 40 years of the ever-evolving Australasian Dance Collective, and two decades of Brisbane’s high priestess of noir, Gail Sorronda.

At its core: Glass Teeth. An excerpt from the ADC’s recent anniversary season, the work — imagined by choreographer Melanie Lane — is a descent into dream logic. Surreal, absurd, and strangely familiar, it glides between myth and memory, sharpened by the eerie pulse of Clark’s music and costumed in Sorronda’s signature romantic minimalism. Think monochrome silhouettes moving through shadow and light — a kind of kinetic poetry.
Once the spell is cast, an in-conversation follows. Hosted by RUSSH Art Director Talisa Sutton, the panel draws together the women behind the work — ADC Artistic Director & CEO Amy Hollingsworth, designer Gail Sorronda, and choreographer Melanie Lane — alongside performer Lilly King. What unfolds is a dialogue on legacy, creative instinct, and what it means to build a life in motion — and in art.
More than a performance, Cut From Movement is a meditation on discipline, collaboration, and the unapologetically bold choices that define a creative lifetime. And for one night, under the archways of The Calile, it’s all stitched together in movement.
