Looking for a cultural fix? Brisbane’s thriving Serbian community is back with their annual Brisbane Serbian Festival – and trust us, it’s the ultimate Eastern European affair.
On Sunday 7 September, Dutton Park will come alive in a flurry of colour, culture, music, and food. Hosted by the Serbian Orthodox community in Woolloongabba, this not-for-profit festival is all about good times, great people, and a whole lot of dancing. The fun kicks off at 10:30 AM, entry is free, and all you need to bring is your crew and your appetite for adventure. If your Father’s Day plans are lacking, this might he the kind of thing Dad is into.
So, what’s on the menu?
Authentic Serbian cuisine
Never tried Serbian food? Prepare to be converted. Expect sizzling meats galore, plus palačinke (crepes), traditional sweets, and plenty to wash it all down with. Think Jelen Beer straight from Serbia and Rakija, the fiery fruit brandy that’s as delicious as it is dangerous.
Live music & dancing
The soundtrack of the day is pure Serbian spirit, with live tunes guaranteed to get you on your feet. Don’t be shy – jump into the Kolo, the iconic circle dance where everyone (yes, even you!) gets swept up in the rhythm.
Folkloric performances
The highlight? Performances from Morava Brisbane, Queensland’s largest Serbian folklore ensemble and a community staple for over 40 years. Expect vibrant costumes, upbeat music, and traditional dances that have travelled the country, showcasing Serbia’s cultural heartbeat. They’ll also be joined by other local folklore groups for an unforgettable spectacle.
Man vs Ćevap
An eating contest for the bold: how many ćevapi (traditional sausages) can you down before the clock runs out? Step up if you dare!
Family-friendly fun
Beyond the food and music, discover stalls from local makers, Serbian language workshops, art exhibits, and a kids’ zone packed with games, crafts, and rides.
Whether you’re chasing culture, cuisine, or just a good time, the Brisbane Serbian Festival delivers it all. Free entry, big vibes, and memories waiting to be made – see you there!
