Your Favourite Childhood Movie Is Coming To Brisbane As A Hit Broadway Musical
one less lonely girl
By Victoria Lewis | 3rd August 2026There’s nothing quite like being in the thick of winter that inspires you to bring some more whimsy into your life, and we’ve got the perfect solution. The Broadway hit production of Anastasia the Musical is heading to Brisbane in September, and it’s arriving just in time to fill your cup with some of that heartwarming nostalgia you’ve been craving.
Inspired by the film adaptation of the story that lived rent-free in all our childhood minds, Anastasia the Musical will bring the dazzling costumes, wintry magic, and bewitching characters to life on stage at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre, with a Tony Award-winning team on their side no less.
Showing up for the arts has never been more important, which is why this Broadway hit arriving in town this September is the perfect time to show some support, whether you’re a seasoned theatre nerd or serial skeptic. Here is everything you need to know about Anastasia the Musical coming to Brisbane from 16 September to 25 October.
The story of Anastasia
In case you needed a little refresher (I did too). The tale of Anastasia you might recognise from the 1997 Oscar-nominated animated film of the same name: Anastasia.
It’s got all the tropes you could possibly ask for in any good storyline: the tale of long-lost family, cheekily charming con men, a heartwarming reunion. It’s a fictional tale based on the mysterious disappearance and rumoured escape of Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov in the early days of the Russian Revolution (something that actually happened). The story follows a young Anya in her journey to find her family and discover her past, with the help of a dashing con man and an endearing ex-aristocrat, of course.
Set in the exuberance of Paris in the 1920s, this one is emotional, heartwarming, and daring all at once, and the kind of tale that gives me goosebumps just thinking of it, let alone live on stage.

The production behind Anastasia the Musical
Directed by Tony Award-winning director Darko Tresnjak, Anastasia the Musical first premiered on Broadway in 2017, and is currently in the midst of an Australian tour. After highly successful runs in Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth, Anastasia is continuing to Adelaide before completing its Australian tour at Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre from 16 September to 25 October.
A dazzling production by the Tony Award-winning team Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty, and Lynn Ahrens, Anastasia will transport you back to your childhood living room in an instant.
Featuring local talent, including Queensland’s very own Georgina Hopson, who trained at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, cast as the protagonist, Anya, Anastasia will showcase world-class talent from here and abroad.
“As a very proud Queenslander, I just can’t wait to share the magic of Anastasia with Brisbane audiences. It’s a beautiful story to be immersed in, accompanied by iconic songs that invoke a nostalgic feeling of our shared childhood, including Once Upon a December and Journey to the Past,” said Hopson.

“Anastasia’s message is the importance of home, love, and family, and to me Queensland represents all of this,” she added.
If you’re sometimes skeptical of the musical genre, fear not, because the tracks for this production are also anything but ordinary. Music and lyrics for the production have been written by the renowned writing team we mentioned earlier, Flaherty and Ahrens, who have been referred to as “one of the greatest songwriting teams in Broadway history,” according to the Chicago Tribune.

If you’ve been meaning to hit the theatre in 2026, now is as good a time as any to dip your toes into the glorious world of Anastasia the Musical, because we’re also giving away four Premium tickets to any Brisbane show.
