Polish Your Pennies: Here’s Where To Play Two-Up In Brisbane This Anzac Day

Beers, burgers and bets. This might be Anzac Day’s greatest tradition.

By Guest Styler | 24th April 2019

For those who don’t know of two-up, prepare to have your mind blown. It’s a super simple game devised by Australian diggers in the trenches of World War I. All that’s needed is a couple of pennies, a wooden paddle to flip them with and a handful of thirsty punters to bet heads or tails. The only problem is that it’s been illegal since its inception…except for one day a year. That day is Anzac Day! In an effort to pay tribute to those who gave their lives for their country, the law looks the other way so that you can play the very game that was played by Aussies in the First World War.

We’ve compiled a list of the best spots to play two-up in Brisbane for you to win yourself a few beers playing our iconic game.

The Regatta Hotel | Toowong

What better way to drink to Aussie battlers than at one of Brisbane’s most iconic watering holes. The Regatta provides the perfect heritage backdrop for a few punts, intermitted with the odd crisp lager. Ben Dobbins, of Triple M fame, will be hosting the Two-Up affairs from 1pm onwards. Get there an hour earlier and you’ll be treated to the Courtyard BBQ for some meaty goodness.

Fox Hotel | South Brisbane

What the Fox lacks in heritage, it makes up for in kitschy-cute décor. The rooftop bar boasts some of the best views in town, particularly in the afternoon with the sun sprawling across the cityscape. Throw in some two-up, live entertainment and a mango or two and you have yourself a heck of an afternoon. For the early birds attending the morning service, ‘gunfire brekky burgs’ will also be on offer.

Caxton Street Hotel | Petrie Terrace

Are you even a Brisbanite if you haven’t had a tipple at the Caxton before heading off to Suncorp Stadium to watch a game? Probably yes, but in case you haven’t done your duty as a Queenslander, this could be your chance, especially when you swap Suncorp for two-up. For those who just crave footy every time they step into The Cacko’, there will be AFL on-screen. But c’mon… We’re all here for two-up!

The Normanby Hotel | Red Hill

A little ways up the road lies the hulking Normanby where you’ll find the best lunch deals in town. Warm up for the games with half-price on their menu all afternoon. Once the carb-loading is complete, you’re welcome to legally gamble the afternoon away with some cheeky two-up.

The Story Bridge Hotel | Kangaroo Point

Once again, the early birds will be catered for. The Story Bridge Hotel will be providing morning service attendees with a well-deserved breakfast from 6.30am. The bars will be opening at 11am, with two-up games beginning appropriately at 2pm. Brisbane band, Forever Road, will provide the soundtrack to the afternoon’s shenanigans at the iconic bar.

The Stock Exchange Hotel
 | Brisbane CBD

You’ve probably been to Stockies before, but have you bet head-to-head against strangers on which side up two coins will land at Stockies? Probably not! So, head on down for an afternoon of beers and bets as the sun comes down behind their famed rooftop bar!

Little Big House | South Brisbane

Easily the youngest venue on the list, Little Big House is still heritage at heart. Set in an enormous Queenslander house, it’s only natural that they’re hosting their own two-up celebrations. You’ll be backed by live music as you go on to win/squander tens of dollars. If you are lucky enough to win a few bucks, every dollar from every Queensland beer you buy will be donated to the Legacy charity.
