There are rare moments in life where you look at your calendar and realise you have two days free of any responsibility, commitments, or plans. Loathe to let this miracle opportunity pass by uncelebrated, you call the girls and realise, with a little wiggling, that they also have free weekends! Clearly a girls' getaway is in order, and where better than the nearby Gold Coast? With some of the best beaches in south-east Queensland, a burgeoning café scene, and incomparable shopping, it makes sense that the Gold Coast is the ultimate locale for a girls’ getaway.
To help you plan your weekend (the fact you even have two commitment-free days off is a miracle – don’t waste precious holiday time planning), we’ve put together this handy guide to help get you ready for your mini-vacay.
If you haven’t got a luxe hotel to relax at, your girls’ getaway is going to fall flat. The recently refurbished The Island is the perfect boutique hotel for your girls’ trip. With expansive views across Surfers Paradise and the Gold Coast hinterland, it’s a surprising sanctuary right in the heart of town. The suites are gorgeous and the perfect spot for you to get your weekend started. Take a quick dip in the pool on arrival, then reconvene in your rooms to say cheers to the weekend! A bottle of champagne is a must.
Get the evening started downstairs at The Island Bistro. Recently revamped, the bistro is an impressive and delectable Italian culinary experience that will have you asking the waiter for more. Think wood-fired pizzas, market fresh seafood (hello, oyster platters), locally sourced produce, and the best damn cocktails on the entire strip. Make sure you try the braised squid with chorizo and pappardelle. To say it is something akin to an otherworldly experience would not be an exaggeration.
What is a girls’ getaway without a little retail therapy? Pacific Fair is the ultimate shopping destination on the Gold Coast. Its more than 400 retailers include Harrolds, Sephora, and all the luxury brands you could hope for. Be still, my beating heart! If you’re keen to avoid the crowds and explore boutiques, our pick of the bunch includes Bird on a Wire, About a Girl, and Arkive True Vintage.
Do we even need to tell you? Surely you know all about the amazing beaches that make up The Gold Coast. From the beloved Burleigh Beach south to the less explored Currumbin Creek, The Gold Coast is an overflowing treasure trove of sandy havens and sun-soaked goodness. Kirra Beach is often (unfairly) overlooked but is one of the most beautiful spots on the coast, while Fingal Head Beach will forever be our favourite spot to throw down our towel and bask in the sun.
When the day winds down and the tan has reached a shimmery glow, it’s time to hit the strip for a couple of drinks. The Island Rooftop Bar is the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxed drink (or two) as the sun goes down. Their unrivalled atmosphere reaches a fever pitch around 11pm, so be sure to have a drink in hand. Après Surf is another local treasure and a gorgeous spot to grab a feed and wet your whistle. Aloha Bar and Dining is a well-loved favourite thanks to their kitschy décor and incredible selection of creative cocktails. Just a warning: some of the cocktails are potent so make sure you’re in the mood for dancing because you will definitely end up throwing down.
If you’re nursing a hangover on your last morning in paradise, you need to get some breakfast inside of you. Paddock Bakery is an OG Gold Coast favourite and well worth the wait, as is the beautiful little café, Bam Bam Bakehouse. We are also big fans of Commune on the northern end of Burleigh. This sweet little café has an exciting menu of unusual breakfast options, which they back up with perfect execution. The okonomiyaki is absolutely delish! There’s no better way to end your girls’ weekend away …
