Little Miss Sunshine, Almost Famous, Zombieland, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas… Everyone loves a good road trip story. After all, it’s the journey that matters and not the destination. Whether it’s the iconic Great Ocean Road and the towering Twelve Apostles, the winding road between Tully and Mission Beach, or one of our local favourites, there’s no shortage of picturesque road trips to discover in our fair country. If you’re feeling the call of the open road, there’s no better time to go exploring! But before you head off, there’re a few things you want to have sorted. From tunes that will keep your spirits high to a car health check that will save you from calling RACQ on the shoulder of the highway; here’s everything you need to know before hitting the accelerator.

Check Your Ride

The last thing your road trip needs is for you to be stranded on the B100 route with a blown tyre and deflated mood. Before hitting the pavement, make sure you perform a quick service on your car to make sure it’s ready to roll. Some good things to check are the oil, radiator fluid, how worn your tyres are, and your tyre pressure. Alternatively, if you’re driving a Mercedes-Benz, just take your wheels into Mercedes-Benz Brisbane for a 60 or 90-minute express service! It’s never been easier to get your wheels road trip ready.

Roadside Assistance

But, if worst comes to worst and you’re parked on the shoulder of the highway with a blown tire and no spare (honestly, what were you thinking?), Mercedes-Benz Road Care will get you going again faster than you can say “tyre iron”. As one of the most comprehensive emergency roadside assistance services in Australia, the Mercedes-Benz Road Care assistance package can help with everything from flat or faulty batteries to lost keys and emergency fuel, 24/7. Of course, some T&C’s apply, so check in with Mercedes-Benz Brisbane to find out if you’re eligible.

Where Are We Going?

Now that your wheels are taken care of, it’s time to work out where you’re going. We recommend you plan as little as possible in order to maintain the excitement and mystery of spontaneous road trips. Pick a destination, maybe organise some accommodation, get the map ready, and go. By not over-planning, you allow the adventure to unfold itself before you and you open yourself to experiences and discoveries that can’t be planned. Although, if there’s anything truly wacky en route, make sure you know about it so that you can pull over and check it out. If you haven’t got at least one photo of yourself with Coffs Harbour’s Big Banana, then your east coast road trip is not complete.

Fuel Yourself

Fuelling yourself is almost as important as fuelling your car. Make sure you pack the car with a bunch of road trip friendly snacks so that you don’t keep pulling over at petrol stations and buying chips and ice cream. Trail mix with chocolate pieces, popcorn and mozzarella and apple (trust us – it’s delicious) are all easy-eat options that are perfect for snacking on while on the road. Pack some cheese, crackers, sandwiches and fruit for when you find a stunning view and decide to pull over for a picnic.

Name That Tune

Because what is a road trip without at least nine renditions of TLC’s No Scrubs? Not a road trip we’d want to be a part of, that’s what! Spotify makes it easy for you to collate all your fave tunes for the road, or to discover ready-made playlists that you can just click play on. If you don’t want to drain your phone battery or use too much data, opt for something a little more old school and grab a couple of CD’s! There’s nothing quite like listening to the same CD on repeat for two weeks, and then hearing it one day months later in a supermarket. Prepare yourself for some serious nostalgia. Mercedes-Benz offer the incredible Burmester Surround-Sound System as an upgrade on some of their range, and, if you take your audio seriously, it is a must for long hours singing karaoke on the road.

Round Up The Crew

What’s a road trip without the whole crew? You can totally take your four-legged pal along on your road trip, but you’ll want to do a little extra prep first to make sure they are happy. Get a vet check-up prior to hitting the open road, book pet-friendly accommodation, and pack all your other pupper essentials like toys, water and food bowls, medication, and all the other knick-knacks.

Other Hints And Tips

Extra things like getting a fuel card (rack up all those flybuys points!), investing in a good quality esky, checking in with a trusted friend regularly, taking dozens of pictures, and bringing along a spare key are all tips and tricks that, while they may seem obvious, are easy to forget. Road trips are an easy way to get out and explore, and the memories you make will be some of the silliest and most treasured. Make sure you hit the road this summer to discover something new!
