Postcards From Palma: 5 Must-Do’s When Visiting Palma De Mallorca

Paradise found

By Bianca Licina | 4th March 2025

Welcome to sun-drenched Palma de Mallorca, the dazzling ‘Pearl of the Mediterranean,’ where vibrant culture meets picture-perfect landscapes. As the final stop on my six-week European summer adventure, Palma de Mallorca was the destination I most eagerly anticipated—and it did not disappoint.

From the moment I arrived, I understood why this island city is beloved by so many. Palma seamlessly blends old-world charm with modern energy, offering something for every type of traveler. It felt like a mix of everywhere I had been, yet entirely unique. Picture the dynamic dining scene of Melbourne, the architectural grandeur of Barcelona, and the labyrinthine cobbled streets reminiscent of Greece – Mallorca truly has it all.

Traveling with a group too large to rent a car, we decided to stay in the heart of Palma to make the most of our visit. Our holiday rental in the city center placed us within walking distance of the bustling shopping districts, the iconic La Seu Cathedral, and a vibrant array of bars and restaurants. This central location made it easy to soak up the city’s atmosphere, stumble upon hidden gems, and embrace the island’s laid-back yet lively vibe.

Ready to make the most of your trip? Here are five things you must do when visiting Palma de Mallorca.

Get lost in the streets

Like most European cities, Palma is best explored on foot. Wander through the picturesque streets, where you’ll discover a treasure trove of trendy boutiques, vintage stores, and architectural marvels at every turn. As you weave through the alleyways, let your senses guide you to local bakeries serving up dreamy pastéis de nata (Portuguese tarts), traditional jamón sandwiches, and, of course, an endless supply of mouthwatering tapas. Whether you’re a history buff, a shopping enthusiast, or a foodie, Palma’s charming streets promise something special around every corner.

Visit the Cathedral of Mallorca

It’s hard to believe that a small Mediterranean island is home to one of Europe’s most awe-inspiring cathedrals, but Palma’s La Seu is nothing short of breathtaking. This Gothic masterpiece, standing proudly against the city skyline, is a testament to the island’s rich history. Step inside and marvel at its towering columns, intricate stained glass windows (including one of the largest rose windows in the world), and the modernist touches added by the renowned architect Antoni Gaudí. Whether you’re religious or not, La Seu’s sheer grandeur is enough to leave anyone in awe.

Explore the food scene

Palma’s culinary scene is as diverse as it is delicious. From effortlessly cool cafés that rival Australia’s best to swanky cocktail bars straight out of New York City, this island knows how to do food and drink right. Whether you’re in the mood for a relaxed brunch or an indulgent fine dining experience, you’ll find plenty of options that are well worth the reservation.

Must-Try Spots:

  • Boscando el Norte – Elevated tapas with a modern twist
  • Brassclub – Craft cocktails in a ultra-ccol space
  • Rosevelvet Eatery – A brunch haven with impeccable pastries
  • Spot – A stylish spot blending Mediterranean and international flavors
  • Surry Hills Coffee – Aussie-inspired coffee culture in the heart of Palma
  • La Molienda – A local favorite for specialty coffee and healthy eats

Spend a day on the water

There’s no better way to experience Mallorca than from the water. Charter a boat (a skipper is highly recommended unless you’re a seasoned sailor) and set sail along the island’s stunning coastline. Drop anchor in dazzling turquoise bays, where you can dive into crystal-clear waters, soak up the Mediterranean sun, and sip on refreshing sangria. Whether you opt for a luxury yacht or a small local boat, this will undoubtedly be one of the most unforgettable days of your trip. Pro tip: pack a picnic with local delicacies like sobrassada, manchego cheese, and fresh figs for the perfect seaside feast.

Explore the island by car

While Palma may be the heartbeat of Mallorca, the island’s true magic lies beyond the city limits. Renting a car gives you the freedom to uncover Mallorca’s hidden gems at your own pace. Cruise along scenic coastal roads, discover secluded coves with impossibly blue waters, and visit charming villages like Deià and Valldemossa, where time seems to stand still. If you’re feeling adventurous, drive up to Cap de Formentor for panoramic views that will leave you speechless. We visited a nearby (nudist, lol) beach, Playa Del Mago, by taxi which offered stunning views and rocky cliffs to sunbathe off and dive into the crystal clear waters.
