If you’re an animal-loving, sunset-seeking, mojito enthusiast like me, you’re going to love this Borneo travel adventure. With its rich cultural heritage, delicious cuisine, and warm hospitality, this is definitely one to add to your destination list.

Sandakan

Our Bornean adventure began in Sandakan, the town of colonial architecture to the lush rainforests. With only a day to spare, we opted for a private guided tour by Viator, to experience the best of Sandakan.

Our day began with a visit to the renowned Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, a 43sq km sanctuary home to approximately 60-80 wild orangutans. One of the furry creatures even descended to the boardwalk only metres away from us in what was an amazing experience.

Next, we visited the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where we gained insight into the vital work of local conservationists. It was a confronting yet valuable insight into the work that goes into rescuing these small bears.

Travelling back into town we witnessed the hustle and bustle of the local food markets by the water. After a long day, we then settled in at Balin rooftop for sunset drinks. A gorgeous ending to an incredible day!

Kota Kinabalu

As the capital of Sabah, Borneo, Kota Kinabalu is a treasure trove of rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.

Our journey began with a visit to the Mari Mari Cultural Village, showcasing the traditions and customs of Sabah’s indigenous groups. As we wandered through the village, we gained insight into the daily lives of the Kadazandusun, Rungus, Lundayeh, Bajau, and Murut communities, trying cultural dishes and watching some traditional dancing.

Next, we embarked on a city tour, exploring Kota’s vibrant streets and historic landmarks. We visited the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque, a stunning example of contemporary Islamic architecture, and the Sabah State Museum, which offered a glimpse into the region’s fascinating history. A stroll along the scenic Waterfront, with its bustling markets and seafood restaurants, completed our day.
