One of Australia’s most defining treasures is its rich Indigenous art scene. From ancient cave drawings to globally acclaimed artists and rising stars, the contribution of First Nations people to both Australia’s and the world’s art landscape is profound.
So, when a fresh new artist bursts onto the scene, there’s always excitement in the air. Brisbane is about to light up with ‘Embers of Heritage’, a breathtaking debut solo exhibition by local artist Dylan Sarra. Hosted by the boutique Mitchell Fine Art in Fortitude Valley, this exhibition will run from 29 October to 14 December, 2024.
Prepare to be immersed in Sarra’s unique exploration of fire, a theme deeply connected to First Nations culture, identity, and history—this is one exhibition you won’t want to miss.
Who is Dylan Sarra?
Dylan Sarra is a name you’ll be hearing a lot more of. A proud member of the Gooreng Goreng people from the Bundaberg region, Sarra’s art is a powerful blend of identity, history, and place, all deeply rooted in his connection to the land and his culture.
Since graduating from the Queensland College of Art in 2022, Sarra has been making waves with his thought-provoking and versatile works, spanning print, digital media, paintings, and sculpture. His art sparks conversations around Indigenous history, with a special focus on the role of fire in shaping identity and community.
‘Embers of Heritage’
In ‘Embers of Heritage’, Sarra delves into the symbolic and cultural significance of fire in Indigenous history, having long been a tool for transformation, renewal, and connection in First Nations communities. As Sarra puts it, “This exhibition reflects my personal journey and highlights fire as a powerful tool for transformation and renewal. Each work captures the knowledge of past generations and highlights the importance of preserving cultural traditions.”
Through his artwork, Sarra invites viewers to reflect on their relationship with fire and its role in the natural world, as well as the cultural heritage that has been passed down through generations.
Must-attend events
For those eager to engage directly with the artist, there are two key events you won’t want to miss. The official opening night is set for Friday 8 November from 6-8pm, where you can meet Dylan Sarra in person and experience the vibrant atmosphere of the exhibition launch.
For a deeper dive into the concepts and stories behind his work, join the Artist Talk on Saturday, November 16, at 2pm.
