If you haven’t heard of Ziggy Alberts, well… you’re missing out! He’s the 25-year-old self-taught musician, home-schooled Sunny Coast raised environment enthusiast that is taking the world (for the third time) by storm.
His music career started out when his parents gifted him a left-handed guitar during his late teen years. Before that, his dreams were much more mainstream, aspirin to be an engineer or dentist. He started out busking (which he still does today and enjoys doing whenever he can) and also performing at cafes and backyard shows (yes, he’d quite literally play in a stranger’s backyard). He writes and sings about personal endeavours and environmental concerns in his lyrics, as he feels it’s important to share and educate people through his music without being preachy. Although, he’s definitely not afraid of pushing the boundaries.
I first stumbled across Ziggy’s heartfelt tunes a few years ago whilst he was busking on the streets of Byron Bay during Bluesfest one Easter long weekend. And now, not long after Ziggy and his crew arrived in NYC, I managed to snap up a quick phone call with him to chat about this year’s Splendour In The Grass festival and snuck in a few extra questions (yes, he’s single ladies).
Just as you would assume listening to his swooning songs, Ziggy was a delight to chat to. He’s kind, well spoken, clever and passionate – he’s not your typical musician. After performing at Splendour’s busking stage for the past few years, Ziggy will have his first official stage alongside big acts including Chance The Rapper, Tame Impala, Childish Gambino, Ocean Alley, Winston Surfshirt, Foals, Hayden James and plenty more.
Returning home in July for the first time in four months this year after his ‘Laps Around The Sun Tour’ in Europe, North America and Canada, Ziggy is looking forward to performing in his home country and catching a few of his favourite artists including Matt Corby, Candy and Chance The Rapper.
On tour, he has the company of his team made up of his family and friends. His sister is his manager, his dad takes care of accounts, he also has two aunties and his two brothers on his team, and mum comes along for the ride too, of course! You may not guess it, but backstage Ziggy has a cool and calm ritual, sitting around and chatting with his crew. He’s not a drinker and hasn’t had a drink in years. In fact, he’s actually a big fan of tea! You’ll always find his yoga mat with him where he also does a little meditating to focus before the big show. He loves to feel the connection with the crowd, no matter how big or small.
Catch Ziggy Alberts on stage this year at Splendour In The Grass on Sunday July 21! And keep an eye out for him busking on the streets of Byron Bay during the weekend from July 19 till July 21. And if you can’t make it down south at all, hit up his tunes on Spotify.
