Words of wisdom from my dad

Words of wisdom from my dad

In honour of dear old dad's day, we asked Brisbane businesspeople Kerrie Hess, Paul Johnston, Tom Sanceau and Jessy Cameron to share the best advice from their dads.

Here at Style, we love our dads. So as a tribute to Father’s Day, we thought we'd ask prominent Brisbane business owners to share their personal stories about their fathers, and reflect on how they've influenced them to this day.

Kerrie Hess | Illustrator

Describe your dad in under 30 words… I'm so lucky my dad has always lived life with a positive, happy attitude.

Describe your dad in three words… Loving, thoughtful, funny.

Favourite memory of your dad? Eating ice-creams at the beach on family holidays.

What's one of the most valuable pieces of advice you have received from your dad? Always keep your own level of independence in life, and work wise, anything is possible. When I told my dad that I had been asked to exhibit a solo show of artworks in Paris, he just say, "oh great, you'll be fine." He was more confident than me!

The number one saying your dad lives by is… If you're not happy about something, its up to you to make the change. And regarding children, kids do what you do, not what you tell them to do (which I think is absolutely true!)

Paul Johnston | Owner and Managing Editor, Style Magazines

Describe your dad in under 30 words… My dad was the consummate gentleman and I was inspired when I think of his morals and ethics.

Describe your dad in three words… The perfect role model.

Favourite memory of your dad? One of my favourite memories was travelling in England and Scotland with my father in my early twenties. I’m one of five children so it was great to hang out just with him. He’d travelled the area many times and it was like he was sharing his playground and his passion.

What's one of the most valuable pieces of advice you have received from your dad?  Be moderate and save for something really valuable as it will be a worthwhile investment.

The number one saying your dad lives by is… Treat others the way you would like to be treated and if you can’t think of anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all. Perhaps that was why he was such a quiet person. Just joking! He seemed to be the sort of guy that when he spoke, everyone stopped to listen.

Tom Sanceau | Restaurateur (Red Hook, London Fields & more)

Describe your dad in under 30 words… A caring, warm, generous and intelligent man who loves his family, food and his books!

Describe your dad in three words… Teacher, father, gentleman (and foodie!)

What's one of the most valuable pieces of advice you have received from your dad? The best advice he's ever given me is to do what you love and follow your heart.

The number one saying your dad lives by is… Dad used to teach Latin when he was a headmaster and this phrase has always stuck with me, "In vino veritas", which translates to "In wine there is truth". And isn't that the truth!

Jessy Cameron | Owner, Molten Store

Jessy Cameron

Jessy's dad was an Air Commodore with the Royal Australian Air Force.

Describe your dad in under 30 words… My father, Stewart, epitomises strength, courage, and honour. He rose through the ranks of the Air Force to become an Air Commodore and is now the State President of the RSL. He has an infallible social conscience. I'm incredibly proud of everything he's achieved.

Describe your dad in three words... Courageous, determined, empathetic.

Favourite memory of your dad? The most vivid memory I have of my father is the day he took my little sister and I panning for gold in a creek on the outskirts of Canberra. We enthusiastically gathered a bounty of glittery stones and dad assured us we'd hit pay dirt. In hindsight, I now realise we'd just collected an assortment of wet rocks.

What's one of the most valuable pieces of advice you have received from your dad? Be deliberate and intentional. Once you've made up your mind, follow through and never give up.

The number one saying your dad lives by is… Respect people for who they are, not what they are.

Jules Tognini | Founder and creative director of Lil of the Top & Salon Director at aka Togninis

Describe your dad in under 30 words... My dad would have to be the most creative person I know, he never slows down and keeps on re-inventing himself.

Describe your dad in 3 words...  Cooler than me.

Favourite memory of your dad? After many years of trying to avoid being a hairdresser, he finally sucked me in. Now not only are we best buds, but we get to travel and work together. Sharing a room occasionally can be fun with all the snoring.

What is one of the most valuable pieces of advice you have received from your dad? Talk to them all but only kiss the pretty ones.

The number one saying your dad lives by is… Being average scares the shit out of me!
