Unusual Birthday Celebration Ideas

How to spend your special day in style.

By Sophie Catsoulis | 9th August 2016

Sweet 16ths, wild 18ths, carefree 21sts and everything in-between – we’ve done it all. And it gets a little boring after a while. But how do you have a great time without resorting to the fallback party plan?

This year, instead of settling for streamers and getting smashed, try your luck with one of these out-of-the-box birthday party ideas.

1. Anchors away

Embark on your best birthday yet with a celebration of the nautical variety. Relax and unwind on a lazy cruise down the coastline or dance the night away on a raging river ride. Sound like a plan, sailor?

2. Take the leap

Adrenaline junkies, rejoice! Literally dive headfirst into the next year of your life. (We’re talking about skydiving, of course.) Forget falling asleep at a family reunion – age adventurously!

3. Suit up

Barney Stinson was right about some things. Celebrate in style in a swanky suit (or designer dress), at your favourite restaurant, function room or even just a friend’s house. Besides the obvious awesome Instagram opportunities, you will feel classy, ultra chic and (let’s face it) cool as hell.

4. Get out of town!

Remember that resort you’ve always wanted to escape to? Whether it’s plane trip or even just a short car ride, a few days away from the busy city could be the perfect way to enjoy your special day or week – you know you get a birthday week, right?

5. Bonfire it up

As simple as it sounds, sometimes the best thing to do is nothing at all. OK, not nothing… but certainly something simple. Why not gather the troops for a beachside bonfire? Marshmallows, some good music and a couple of drinks – there’s no need to go on. I was hooked at “marshmallows”.
