Tinder to Find a New BFF is a Thing Now

Forget finding a date: here's the app to help you find new female friends.

It’s here! A new Tinder-like app designed to help you Hey! VINA. No, we’re not talking about finding a date, or cuddle buddy; we’re talking hooking you up with your new BFF.

As far as dating goes, we’re spoiled for choice: Tinder, OKCupid, Ideal Introductions, eHarmony or a good old-fashioned set-up. We’re proactive about finding our spouse but we’re not quite so proactive about making new female friends. Which seems ridiculous, because ovaries before brovaries, right?

But just like adulting is hard, so too is finding ways to make new, like-minded friends as a grown-ass woman. How do people normally do this? You can swipe right on apps to find a romantic soulmate (or casual fling) but you can’t do the same for lady friends? Why can’t you just sit on a bar stool with a glass of wine and “pick up” a pal?

Enter Hey! VINA, an app created by Olivia June Poole and Jen Aprahamian. It’s Tinder for girlfriends and it’s the best thing we’ve seen in ages. The app’s launch statement proclaims “Hey! VINA aims to solve the challenge of making new friends as adult women with a Tinder-style UX and a proprietary matching algorithm to suggest potential new friends based on mutual friends, proximity, and quiz data.”

Normal speak? You’ll take a quick quiz of yes or no answers, set up a bit of a profile (I like wine, cheese, Netflix, cheese, going for walks, and also cheese), and get swiping. When you find someone with similar interests, “Ditto!” will appear on the screen (similar to Tinder’s “It’s a match!”). And that’s it! You’re matched with your perfect pal who shares your heart’s desires.

The Hey! Vina app will help you find your new BFF!, Apps, friends, Tinder

SO much easier than trying to meet people through awkward hobbies.

This person will be close by for easy catch-ups and may even share mutual friends with you. Of course, like any online dating app, you’ll have to meet up to see if you’re compatible. If the chemistry isn’t there it doesn’t matter how much you both like cheese (a lot), does it? But it certainly streamlines the process of finding “The One” to hold your hand in case the romantic “One” doesn’t quite work out!

“We want our users’ new connections to meet offline as soon as possible,” Olivia tells The Huffington Post. “We’re building our introduction artificial intelligence (AI) to consider both parties’ lifestyle preferences and making suggestions for activities to do.”

For the first “lady date”, the app will then suggest a hiking trail nearby if both women like outdoor activities, or a cosy wine bar if they both like vino. This virtually eliminates the whole umming and ahhing awkwardness of where to meet up that’s a hitch in most popular dating apps.

Hey! VINA will come as excellent news for people who are new in town and don’t particularly want to sign up for an outlandish hobby to try to meet up with people. Or lazy people who can’t be bothered leaving the house to find lady love everlasting.

The app officially launched January 26 in San Francisco and will launch in New York City in the coming weeks. No word on Australia yet but we are crossing our fingers.

“Female friendships are absolutely essential,” Olivia says. “We hope women find their new best friends, traveling partners, brunch dates, wing girls, mommy friends, workout partners, etc. on the platform.”
