So you put your hand up to host an awesome Australia Day party. Pretty exciting, right? Maybe a little bit stressful too? Fear not, we have you covered with the eight essentials you need to pull off a fair-dinkum Aussie extravaganza.
1. Did someone say CHEESE?!
Since cheese platters have taken every household by storm, prepping one of these is a vital part of the food plan for the day. You need a snack while you’re waiting for the barbie, right?
2. Drinks, Drinks oh and Drinks!
Since almost every Australia Day party takes place in sweltering heat, you can never go wrong with a cold drink. Why not get creative this year and make up your own cocktails? Ever heard of a Red Corvette Cocktail? SO many strawberries, melon and hazelnut liqueur and a whole lot of ice – YUM! And you should never underestimate the pure joy of a full esky of beers.
3. Beat the Heat!
Splash your way into Australia Day with a pool! Don’t own a pool? Get an inflatable one or learn to fake it so everyone can get in on the action.
4. Throw it on the Barbie
No Australia Day party is complete without a good BBQ, even if everyone’s busy snacking on that cheese platter beforehand. Steak, sausages, shrimp (thanks, Paul Hogan) and lamb are a must.
5. Hit for six
Get ready for one of the greatest sports ever grace a backyard: it’s cricket, baby! Grab a drink and cricket bat and join in on the festive fun! Just be prepared for good-natured sledging.
6. Decor Goodness
Set the mood with the coolest Australia Day decorations out! Green and gold are a must but don’t be afraid to add in a touch of red and blue in the mix. If you’ve been to the shops lately I’m sure you have been bombarded with Australia Day decorations so go wild!
7. Sit down & relax
Remember to have fun! Being the host can be a stressful job so take time to chill out, listen to great tunes, indulge in amazing food and drinks with friends and take in this beautiful country we call home.
