The Benefits of Sleeping on a Silk Pillowcase

You snooze you lose, right?

We’ve all heard tales of the magical silk pillowcase – beauty sleep’s secret weapon. But is this alternative to cotton really worth your attention? Or is it just another Kardashian tip that is yet to be proven beneficial?

My silk robe and I are basically one, but sleeping on silk is something that had never really occurred to me. That is, until I researched the reasoning behind this beauty hack.

As it turns out, the best type of silk is 100 per cent long-strand mulberry silk, which comes from silkworms that are fed an exclusive diet of mulberry leaves. This special diet helps to produce a more durable thread than that of wild silk.

Mulberry silk is much more gentle on your skin than man-made fabrics because it is entirely natural (and hypoallergenic). The breathable material also won’t deplete your skin’s moisture levels.

I know what you’re thinking – how can a pillowcase moisturise my skin? Well, silk is much less absorbent than cotton. This means that your night creams and serums (and tears from spending so much money on products that do nothing) will soak into your skin rather than your pillow.

I am one of those people who wakes up every day with visible face creases from my pillow. Silk pillowcases may just be the answer to that problem as well. Silk won’t pull on the skin; it helps to maintain the texture with no effort at all. That’s a definite win.

Using a silk pillowcase doesn’t just benefit your skin. Sleeping on silk will also benefit your locks. The ultra-smooth fabric won’t bind or catch hair the way manmade fabrics often will. Also, the natural oils in your hair will be maintained rather than soaked up, leaving your hair smooth and nourished. This is especially beneficial for hair types that are prone to frizz.

Swapping your go-to cotton pillowcase for a silk version actually packs major (and noticeable) beauty benefits for your skin and hair. Now you actually CAN get beauty sleep. And those summer nights spent trying to decide on the cooler side of the pillow will be no longer. These are some of our favourite silk pillowcases on the market right now.
