You know The Barracks as one of Brisbane’s hottest bustling food and entertainment precincts, but what do you know about its history? Once upon a time, The Barracks was a jail, before being transformed into a police depot complete with police horse stables. And that’s only the start of the secrets of The Barracks; we’ve uncovered the best hacks to get the most out of the precinct. Seriously, if you don’t know this stuff you can’t call yourself a local, so get on board!

1. Movie and meal discounts

Usually you’d be hard-pressed to find ANYWHERE that would do a five-course meal for $35, let alone a five-course meal AND an adult movie ticket. Libertine Bar and Restaurant, with its French colonial decor and French-Vietnamese cuisine, has this amazing deal on offer every single Monday. And the best part? You don’t have to use your movie ticket that night; you can save it and get two nights of entertainment for one amazing price. Score!

2. FREE Sangria

Peasant Barracks Food Sangria

Hands up who’d like to share an icy-cold jug of sangria with friends on a hot day? What if we told you your first round of the Spanish cocktail could be free? Each weekend brings Sangria Sundays to Peasant at The Barracks; for every table of six or more that books for Sunday lunch, your first round of sangria is on the house. Who can say no to that? No one, that’s who… unless you don’t drink. But then that means more for the rest of us.

3. Classy cinema… with a bar!

You haven’t been to a cinema until you’ve been to Palace Cinemas. You won’t find any sticky floors or run-of-the-mill movie snacks here… think plush chairs, gourmet sandwiches and cakes, and of course the all-important bar with local and international premium wine and beer. How classy! Even their popcorn is fancy and healthy, popped using olive oil. They have a mix of quality art house films and mainstream movies, as well as excellent film festivals. Insider tip: if you join their Movie Club program, you can get free and discounted tickets, birthday gifts, food vouchers and more. Luxe for less!

4. Fitness classes

You’ve heard of Lorna Jane activewear but did you know The Barracks has a Lorna Jane Active Living Room that’s a three-in-one venue? It’s part activewear boutique, part healthfood store, part fitness studio, and touted as a place to nourish yourself, shop the latest activewear and workout all in one location. For just $10, LJ Active Living Room offers bespoke group fitness classes including high-intensity interval training (HIIT), yoga and even Lorna Jane’s signature workout LJ Physique. So grab some friends, put on your activewear, activewear and move your butt!

5. Free wine, beer and cider tasting nights

Every Friday, the folks at Stewarts Wine Co. offer wine, beer, cider and spirits tastings to wet your whistle as you welcome the weekend. They do a range of fun themed nights, focusing on select brands and varietals each week, and there are experts on hand so you can soak up all the knowledge while tasting your new fave tipples. It’s an excellent way to educate yourself so that, come Christmas, you can show up your wine snob cousin with your super-awesome know-how.

6. Meal deals

Those in the know are all over the meal deals on offer all through the week at The Barracks. Every Monday FaB (Fish and Burgers Grill to you) offer up a mouth-watering burger bargain for Brisbane foodies. All burgers on their menu go down to just $9.95 and, if you’re feeling extra hungry or thirsty, you can make it a meal with a side of chips and a schooner of beer for just $19.95. Or you could head on over to Los Villanos, where you can purchase any burrito and either a frozen margarita or Tecate for just $20. Stop it, Barracks, our mouths are watering too much.

7. Be a lad or lady who lunches… without breaking the bank

The Barracks keeps delivering when it comes to food specials. Fancy being a lad or lady who lunches? Do so in style on the cheap at Chelsea Bistro; the charming restaurant has a $35 fixed-price deal offering a small plate, a light meal and a glass of wine. How fancy!

8. Secret car wash

Underneath this bustling hub, there’s a secret car wash just waiting to get the grime off your grill. Drop off the car, take advantage of the cinema upstairs and come back to a sparkling clean machine.
