The Art Of Giving

The Art Of Giving

Gift giving is hard work! If the art of gift giving is a little lost on you, here's a little help with a guide to gift shopping in Bulimba.

Gift giving is an art form in Japan and whilst the finer points may be lost on most of us, there’s no doubt that giving a great gift is a pleasure that should be savoured.

Of course, the joy of giving is purely the tip of the iceberg with the procurement process often under pressure as you race to pick something that will ‘do’. As a busy working mother based in Bulimba I have had my share of gift-stress and have come up with a few fail-safe options to bring back the zen of giving. Here’s my catch–all categorisation that has helped me deliver the goods.

The MIL is always a tricky one – what do you get someone who has everything she needs and thinks you shouldn’t have? Coming Up Roses is my go-to gift shop of choice for the beautiful gift that will ensure she is glad you did. To date I’ve treated my much loved MIL to trendy beads, funky shopping bags and beautiful coffee table books on her fave hobbies from this little gem tucked away on Riding Road - and there’s plenty more where they came from, thank goodness.

The Bestie

Green Grass

Arlington suede purse $99.95, Rare rabbit beads $34.95, Green Grass Home & Body Signature Candle $34.95, Green Grass Home & Body

Green Grass Home and Body is a sure bet to find something suitable for the BFF. While a rummage through the rails, handbags and shoes always turns up some stunner for the fashionista friend, the homewares is where it’s at for something to treat your houseproud pal who has been poring through interior design magazines to perfect her dream home.A word of warning though; expect to want to redecorate your home every time you enter the store!

Lil Princesses

Little Avenue

Bella & Lace Denim Tutu $89.95, Bella & Lace Little Kings and Queens crown, Little Avenue.

For the littlest fashionista of the house, head straight to Little Avenue. You'll discover gorgeous finds that will put a smile on her face and yours, with the cutest fashion and gifts this side of the river.

Skater Boys

Fuel Skater Boy

Vans perforated leather slip on $100, Fuel script tee $30, MLB Milwaukee Brewers cap $49.99, Fuel

Boys of all ages are all drawn to Fuel Clothing sooner or later - whether they actually skate or just like the look! From footwear to beanies and everything in between, Fuel caters perfectly from 'tweens to teens and even those heading over the hill (but still young at heart).

School Friends

I’ll confess to having been caught out more than once by a class birthday bash, and Crackerjack Toys has never failed to come to the party. These guys have every toy a child could dream of, so you can swoop in, select your present, be writing the card as the staff gift wrap it, and be out of the door in under 10 minutes. Present shopping perfection!

The ‘Acquaintance’

Kova Homewares

Extra small bone inlay box $55, small wrinkle leather journal $25, medium hand-painted knot by Cassandra Smith $74, Kova Lifestyle

Everybody has that person; not family, not quite friends and definitely not close enough with them to make a decision on their preference of taste. Cue Kova Lifestyle; the newest retailer to reach the streets of Bulimba and a very welcome one at that. With a second stunning location in James Street, their big range of exquisite giftware is perfect for anybody who has a love for fine things. With an array of colour palettes in homewares, fashion, trinkets, and even stationary, this treasure trove is guaranteed to come up trumps in everyone's books - colleagues, mutual friend or distant relatives included!
