What started life as a humble Melbourne laneway music festival waaay back in 2005 has blossomed over the past 12 years, and now in 2017 we are set to welcome what could very well be the best Laneway Festival yet. Sure, we might be jumping the gun a little – but with Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals and Mac Demarco already confirmed to play (the full lineup comes out on September 12) we’re placing our bets with more than just a little confidence. Pre-sales have already been exhausted, and we’re primed and ready for yet another year of sweaty crowds, cold ciders and, of course, music par excellence from the wonderful stages of Laneway.
Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals (LA) have been on the up and up ever since a 2015 collaboration with Dr. Dre on his album Compton resulted in a rapidly growing fan base. Their music has allusions to electronic, pop and house; while Anderson’s perceptive lyrics burst forth rhythmic and strong. Currently on a tour across the USA and Canada and gracing our shores for Laneway (and hopefully a couple of sideshows), Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals are definitely an act to get you up on your feet.
Another confirmed artist is dreamy, woozy, ethereal Mac Demarco (Canada). This multi-instrumentalist and prolific songwriter plays the kind of poetic musical stylings reminiscent of Kurt Vile, with a little bit of Ween thrown in for good measure. His latest release, This Old Dog, boasts a slew of chilled lyric and guitar-driven music, with the titular track well worth a listen, as is the number one song on the album, My Old Man. Be sure to make a spot in your Laneway plan for Mac Demarco. And hey, if you find yourself needing to have a bit of a sit down during the day, Mac would be just the chap to do it with. Find a shady spot, lean back and soak up the music as the afternoon drifts by around you.
Summer just wouldn’t be the same without Laneway, and if you’re anything like us you’re counting down the days, locking in the Monday off work to make a long weekend of it, and already thinking about the perfect outfit. Oh, and make sure you get your tickets in plenty of time, because if the last few years are anything to go by it’s sure to sell out.
