It’s the pop-up dining phenomenon the whole world is talking about and it’s officially coming to the Gold Coast.
Clouded in mystery and with an air of exclusivity, Dîner en Blanc is an international dinner party like no other. There’s something about how a love of good food and great company can unify people from all walks of life. And that’s exactly what makes Dîner en Blanc so damn special.
You’re probably wondering, “What actually is Dîner en Blanc?” Well, Dîner en Blanc literally means “dinner in white” and it began almost 30 years ago when Frenchman François Pasquier invited 10 of his friends to have dinner in a secret location (dressed in white, of course). Over time, word spread and more and more people wanted to attend. You could say the concept kind of took off. These days, it’s hosted at various landmark locations in more than 70 cities all over the world and has become somewhat of a global dining phenomenon – one that everyone (including us) is dying to be a part of.
At Dîner en Blanc, there’s a long, internationally observed list of key rules you must adhere to, with the number-one requirement being that you MUST dress head-to-toe in white (no, not beige, ivory or cream. It must be crisp WHITE, guys). And there’s also one minor detail regarding the location … you won’t know where the event is being held until the day of. For all you over-organised souls, try not to fret! The element of surprise adds an air of mystery and excitement to the whole phenomenon. It also helps to eliminate gate-crashers (cos no one likes a party pooper). You’ll also need to BYO everything. That means your table, chairs, food, drinks, cutlery and napkins. Oh, and there’s also this unspoken rivalry to do with table decorations, so don’t forget to bring your A-game there, too.
So how do you score an invite? Well here’s the thing … It’s kind of hard to score an invite to this super-secret soirée. You see, Dîner en Blanc is not advertised. You can only go if you’re invited by someone who has been before or by being a part of the host’s or leaders’ networks. Either that, or you join the super-long waiting list, pray to the food gods and hope for the best. The good news is, just like a secret society, once you’re in, you’re in. So you’ll be welcome at every event in the future.
But before all your frantic outfit planning starts, you’ll need to know some more information. On Wednesday June 28, the event organisers will reveal the exclusive details surrounding the first ever Dîner en Blanc on the Gold Coast. We already know they’re partnering with Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, Gold Coast BMW, QT Gold Coast and Moët Chandon, plus a collaboration with Progressive Catering and Witches Falls Winery. Pretty good start, right?
So keep your ear to the ground. We’re not 100 per cent sure what else they’ll reveal, but whatever it is, it’s certain to have a big impact on the global spectacle that is Dîner en Blanc.
