With temps set to hit the mid-30s this Australia Day (yeeeowch!) we all need a timely reminder to stay cool and SunSmart – the only thing that should end up red is the tomato in your raw paleo clean eating salad!
Last year, more than half of all Queensland kids and adults experienced sunburn – some with significant blistering. Even before you see a burn on your skin, serious damage can be caused by sun exposure – in as little as 10-15 minutes during our Queensland summer!
Sunburn not only increases your risk of melanoma and other skin cancers, it prematurely ages the skin, causing wrinkling, pigment damage, and (horror of all horrors) sun spots.
So this Australia Day, don’t get caught out – get caught sun stylin’ with our five handy tips:
Slip on sun protective clothing for outdoor celebrations – kimonos and kaftans are well on trend, keeping you cooler, shadier and still highly fashionable as your friends throw another shrimp on the barbie.
Keep that sunscreen handy, and slop it on every two hours for best protection against UV rays. Go for minimum SPF30 broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen and use one teaspoon per limb, front and back of the torso, face and neck to ensure maximum coverage.
Slap on a broad-brimmed hat! Wide brims teamed with a gorgeous on-trend SunSmart ensemble can be effortlessly chic, and keep your face, neck and ears protected from sunburn too.
Seek shade if you’re spending the nation’s holiday outdoors – whether at the beach, by the pool, at a park or playing a game of backyard cricket. Avoid the harsh sun when the UV Index level is three or above to best reduce your skin cancer risk.
Slide on wrap-around sunnies to prevent glare and keep your eyes safe from sun damage. The more oversized your shades are, the better!
We’re helping all Queenslanders take another step to get in the ‘Straya Day spirit too – with our new green and gold triple zinc pack! It’s SPF50+ and four hours’ water resistant – pick it up at our Brisbane SunSmart Shop in the Valley or online at cancerqld.org.au.
