In Conversation: Sarah Ellen On Her Move From Modelling To Music

She's all that

By Natalie McGowan | 5th September 2024

Sarah Ellen has been in the limelight since she was 13. OG followers will remember her as the “dancing eyebrows girl” when she uploaded a video to her YouTube account, moving her brows to the beat of Don’t Stop The Rock. The video racked up over 56 million views. Now, 13 years later, and Sarah’s talents extend far beyond viral fame.

Model, actor, artist, internet personality, and all-around girl crush, she has one more feather to add to her already-crowded cap: musician. After debuting her band Paloma at Newtown’s Pleasure Club last month, we caught up with the Aussie It girl about her exciting foray into the music scene.

When did you first start making music?

Music has always been the greatest and most consistent love in my life. In my early teens, I used songwriting as a tool to express my feelings toward the most important people in my life. Looking back, I can now see it was a creative form of therapy. Nowadays I write music with Josh Kempen, a dear friend and talented musician. We still approach songwriting with the same philosophy, we want to tell stories, heal ourselves and make people feel good.

What made you make the jump from fashion, modelling, and acting to music?

I could no longer deny how my soul constantly gravitated toward music and how it invigorated me.

What can audiences expect from your performances?

Let’s just say it’s something for the indie-pop lovers. Josh and I have created a set that will soothe the soul but in the same beat make you want to get up and dance. Personally,  I love immersing myself in live music and often head to Newtown to check out new artists for inspiration, so l hope to leave the audience with the same feeling.

How are you feeling about returning to Sydney’s Pleasure Club to perform with Jonnie Walker Black Ruby?

I was so excited to be returning to the Pleasure Club to perform with Johnnie Walker Black Ruby. Pleasure Cub is where it all started for us, we had our first friends and family gig there and I couldn’t believe we got to do it all again, but this time, it was for a whole new audience. To have everyone singing and dancing along whilst sipping on some delicious Black Ruby…it was a night to remember.
