Red Hill Cinemas is set to become the hottest hub in Brisbane for film buffs and art lovers alike, after developers were given the green light for the proposed refurbishment last year. The land where the iconic Red Hill Skate Rink once stood will be transformed into the boutique cinema after it was opened to the public for the first time on Sunday.
Located on Enoggera Road, the heritage-listed building has seen numerous transformations over the years, including an open-air theatre, nightclub and skate arena before it was burned to the ground on Boxing Day in 2002. Virtually untouched since, Red Hill’s local residents are over the moon to see their favourite childhood hangout brought back to life.
Five Star Cinemas, who are responsible for the Yatala Drive-In, the refurbishment of the New Farm Cinemas back in 2013 and the Elizabeth Picture Theatre more recently in 2017, are behind the $10 million project. The family owned chain says they are looking to bring back the ‘grand old days’ to the inner city site.
The cinema will see a combination of retro and historical with the century-old archways restored and key features of the old skate rink, including the canvas chairs, kept intact. The ever so popular graffiti that the site has attracted over the last few years will also remain. It will include five cinemas, one with 120 seats and the other four with 60 seats, all reclining.
Red Hill Cinemas is due to open within the next couple of years. We’ll be sure to keep you in the loop of any updates!
