Brisbane wife, mum, and founder of PONO Probiotics, Daina Lindsay, shares with us her passion for probiotics, gut health, and living a healthy and full life.

Occupation: Founder/Director PONO Probiotics

When did you start your business?

My family and I relocated from South Australia to Queensland in 2016 and in the process, introduced the kids to a new childcare, new climate and new illnesses. After a few months of settling in and the kids catching everything, Sands my son at only 11 months old ended up in intensive care with a respiratory infection. After a 24 hour stay in hospital, I began to look at the possibility that there may be a further underlying issue with his immune system. A very caring doctor explained the impact that antibiotics could have on gut flora and inspired me to begin a journey of research and learning into the importance of gut health for the entire family. This is what lead me to the creation of PONO Probiotics.

Tell us a bit about PONO Probiotics

PONO is a fun family friendly probiotic range that tastes delicious, and our products are in a format that can enable them to be incorporated into smoothies, cereal, yoghurt, puddings, bliss balls, or even taken straight off the spoon. The aim was to create a product that could seamlessly be introduced into our daily routine. Kids are always very cautious when it comes to taking medicine, so we wanted to create something that wasn’t medicinal. We wanted to produce industry leading products in an approachable, tasty, family friendly format.

What excites you most about running PONO Probiotics?

PONO has changed our lives, it really has impacted our health in a positive way and to think it’s changing others is a great thing. We have such an amazing return customer base, so I get excited for what’s to come in the next 2-5 years.

What does PONO stand for?

PONO is an ancient Hawaiian word that means rightness, correctness, alignment, goodness, excellence and well-being. These are things that we hope for in life for ourselves, our families and also our health!

Advice you give to mums on raising healthy children?

A huge one for me is to get your children eating their fruit and vegetables and a wide variety of them. Even if my little ones don’t like it, I still pop it on their plate every week or make it look different. You would be surprised how successful you can be just by changing the shape, or texture of the fruit or veg, for example cut into circles rather than lengthways, mashed over chips, etc.

Secondly, we always get out kids out and about for some exercise, we walk when we can, we now love doing parkrun on the weekends with the kids – it’s a great way to be active in the local community with your family.

Thirdly would be I always have the kids taking a probiotic in the morning. Luckily, they love our products They are so simply to incorporate. For school kids and day-care it’s great to add to their water bottle so they are drinking their water and boosting their immune system.

Do you have some advice on how to live an optimal healthy lifestyle?

For me it’s really about living a healthy balanced lifestyle. I always follow the basics of eating my fruit and veg, drinking plenty of water, exercising and also getting enough sleep each night.

What’s your heritage?

I was born in South Australia, as were my parents, however all my grandparents are Latvian.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Adelaide, South Australia.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I have locked myself in for 4 half marathons this year, so much of my spare time is spent training at the moment, however I am all about a balanced lifestyle so if I am not training then I love heading to the beach or catching up with friends for an afternoon BBQ.

Favourite café/restaurant in Brisbane?

My all-time fav is Spice Den, and then heading to Mr Percival’s for a cocktail.

Product you can’t live without?

It would have to be my iPhone.

What a day on a plate looks like for you?

Breakfast – I always start the day off with a smoothie. My fav smoothie to get me going is a shot of coffee, a frozen Banana, scoop of protein powder, a teaspoon of our Coconut Plus Probiotic Powder, Almond Milk, Cinnamon and Ice. Blend and you are done! It’s so yummy.

Lunch – I tend to have a salad wrap or just a salad with some tuna

Afternoon snack – Carrots or rice crackers with hummus

Dinner – Some kind of bowl food. We love making our own poke bowls or buddha bowls at the moment.

Instant pick-me-up is...

My morning smoothie.

Where do you seek inspiration from?

Podcasts – so many amazing stories out there and so many amazing entrepreneurs.

Can’t put down read?

I enjoyed The Probiotics Revolution: The Definitive Guide to Safe, Natural Health Solutions Using Probiotic and Prebiotic Foods and Supplements, by Gary B. Huffnagle  with Sarah Wernick. This book is easy to read and so informative – this book helped start our journey to living a healthier lifestyle.

What motivates you or keeps you focused?

My husband. He always knows how to challenge me, lift my mood and keep me going.

Next holiday destination?

Noosa for my second half marathon of the year. A good excuse to stretch out the weekend and make it a holiday for the family. We are so lucky that’s it’s only a 2 hour drive away.

Where’s your happy place?

Hawaii, there is just something so magical about the place.

I’m passionate about…

Gut Health! As they say, your gut is your bodies second brain.

Drink of choice

I should say something healthy, however nothing beats a cold glass of champagne on the weekend.

On Sunday, you’ll find me…

At Milton Markets or Charlies Fruit Market picking up my fruit and veg for the week, then a quick trip to Bunnings to pick up something for the garden. After all the hard work I tend to relax with a glass of wine with my husband and watch the kids play in the backyard.
