History nerds unite, this is going to be the historical movie of the year. Many of you may know Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots as a complicated, red-headed ruler in the 16th century. When you have been crowned Queen at 6 days old in a patriarchal society, you’ve got to expect a tumultuous life ahead of you. Defying pressure to marry, the movie follows the life of this young Queen as she rules over France, becomes widowed at 18, asserts her claim to the English throne and is condemned to years of imprisonment, ultimately leading to a brutal beheading.
Directed by Josie Rourke, Margot Robbie stars as Queen Elizabeth I and Saoirse Ronan as Mary Stuart in this female dream team. As these rival Queens fight for the throne, romantic interests collide, diverging religions clash and loyalty’s divide in one serious historical drama.
