So, how long have you been running BlissSilk?
I started BlissSilk in 2017, so just a little under 2 years now.

Who/what gave you the idea to start your business?
I re-affirmed my passion for silk during a family trip to China. I have always been fascinated by this lovely, organic fibre and have owned many beautiful silk pieces over the years. However, when I came across and purchased a couple of silk pillowcases for myself, I truly fell in love. This sparked the beginning of my research on the amazing benefits silk has to offer for skin, hair and overall wellbeing. I wanted to share my knowledge and promote natural alternatives for beauty and health. So, BlissSilk was born.

What did you do before starting up your brand?
I worked for Qantas Airways for 23 years and was blessed with a job that allowed me to explore the world. An opening of a new door presented itself as an opportunity for a new career and I took a huge leap of faith. A scary, exciting step and a big change but I’m so appreciative of my new life.

How did you actually get your brand up and running?
With a lot of hard work, perseverance, research, and tremendous support from family and friends. I had to learn how to run a business from scratch. Everything from web design, social media, product design, regulations, and so much more. Every day I continue to learn. Thankfully there is a lot of information out there and knowledgable people willing to help. It takes time and effort but is rewarding and exciting when it all comes together.

What excites you the most about your business?
I appreciate beautiful things that give us pleasure and make us smile. I love seeing the wonder on someone’s face as they open one of our BlissSilk gift boxes and see the luxurious fabric. I don’t think anyone can resist running their fingers over it and letting out a little gasp of ‘wow”. This makes me happy and excites me because I want to develop more beautiful silk pieces that are not only luscious against our skin and packed with benefits but also pleasing to the eye, through colour and pattern.

What is the most exciting thing/s you’ve encountered whilst running BlissSilk?
So much excitement happens on a daily basis, from reading wonderful feedback, gaining new followers or helping people feel better about themselves. Regardless of whether it’s promoting better skin, smoother hair or assisting cancer patients through chemo, I am always excited when I receive acknowledgment and positive feedback. It puts a really big smile on my face.

Let’s be real… What are some of the biggest issues you’ve faced while running BlissSilk?
Starting a business from scratch is difficult. I had a lot to learn about many different aspects and I’m still learning. The technical side of the business such as developing a website, understanding the ins and outs of social media and marketing are all a huge challenge for me. I mean, I didn’t even understand the importance of a hashtag and what it actually meant, until not so long ago. Thanks to a couple of honest and forward friends, who helped me master the concept, I feel that I’m getting there and am on the right track. Social media is the way of the world now and provides some challenges, for me, I think mostly emotional. However, with time and through developing confidence, I’m can appreciate the many positives it has to offer.

My son Oskar, is my saviour when it comes to addressing these challenges. He is great at uploading and editing content for the website as well as helping to get our products out there through different channels. I don’t know how I would have done it without him.

Give us a little insight on a day-in-the-life of your business.
My day consists of constant research and looking for new ideas and inspiration through magazines, online articles, blogs etc. I want to know what people love and appreciate. Social media takes a huge chunk of my day as I’m constantly trying to build on how far I’ve come.

I also spend a lot of time corresponding with suppliers, making sure everything is of high-quality standard that BlissSilk stands for, so that my customers can enjoy my products as much as I do. I still have a major role in dispatching orders, however with each day becoming busier, I feel some tasks need to be delegated to others. I do wish to continue to have a hands-on role in my business as it grows.

What are your favourite things to do in your spare time?
I still love to travel as it inspires me with ideas for BlissSilk, but spending time with my family and good friends, great food, wine, and music are most important to me. Many happy sing-along nights are had with a fantastic group of people surrounding me. I treasure these moments.

What future plans do you have for your brand?
I started off with just the basics of silk pillowcases, hair caps, and eye masks but have added new products along the way, which have been really popular (who would have thought the humble scrunchies would make a comeback!). We have wonderful new products and prints coming out as this goes to print and I’m really excited to see if everyone else loves them as much as I do.

I have many visions and dreams in my head but you’ll have to watch this space for more of what’s to come. I want this to be a lasting business because of my true love and appreciation of silk. I’ll take things one-step at a time and continue to enjoy every moment.

Some tips for up-and-coming business owners or people who want to start up a label?
Don’t be afraid to give it a go. Do your research, do the work, persevere and don’t give up. There are always going to be ups and downs and it’s all part of the enjoyment of running a business,
I am so glad I did it!

So, how long have you been running BeautyXTD?
BeautyXTD has been running for over a year now. We officially launched our own beauty branded products on the 24th of November 2018. Initially releasing eight unique, faux mink, reusable strip eyelashes, along with an exclusive eyeshadow palette labeled, ‘The Care Stare Palette’. Since then we have continued to expand our business, growing a larger variety of Beauty Brands and continuing to plan future BeautyXTD Products

Who/what gave you the idea to start your business?
BeautyXTD is an extension of the Xtend group, where LashXtend Beauty and LashXtd focus on Lash extensions and beauty services. I created BeautyXtd, because I wanted to branch out in the beauty industry and begin catering to a wider audience. I already loved the field that I was in and I wanted to learn more about makeup and skin care.

What did you do before starting up your brand?
I started off in the beauty industry with my own beauty salon; LashXtend and Beauty. As it grew, I opened my own wholesale lash supplier; LashXtd and LashXtend Academy, where I trained students to become lash artists.

How did you actually get your brand up and running?
Having experience setting up my three businesses beforehand really helped with the process. At first, BeautyXtd was a part of LashXtd, however, I knew that I wanted to separate the brand from my past work so I created an entirely new company. It was from there that I was able to take on brands such as Dermalogica, Pixi Cosmetics, Loving Tan, INC.Redible etc, and eventually create my own line.

What excites you the most about your business?
I am so excited by all of the possibilities that BeautyXtd has opened. Opening the wholesale store has already given me the opportunity to develop my own products and explore the creative and unique world of the makeup industry. It has given me the chance to network with amazing people and expand my business.

What is the most exciting thing/s you’ve encountered whilst running Beauty XTD?
Launching the Care Stare Eyeshadow palette was definitely the most exciting part over the past year. It was amazing to see all my and my girls work come to life and to see how creative people could be with the palette is so inspiring.

Let’s be real… What are some of the biggest issues you’ve faced while running Beauty XTD?
It hasn’t been all sunshine and roses, running a business that has a lot of different variables. One of the biggest issues, but most rewarding was organising and running the BeautyXtd Launch Party. There were a lot of obstacles that came with running the large-scale event, as well as having everything polished beforehand. We wouldn’t have been able to complete it without our amazing sponsors and ambassadors.

Give us a little insight on a day-in-the-life of your business.
Day to day work is different every day. I am usually in the office or the salons managing and overseeing my staff, conducting meetings and making sure everything is running smoothly.

What are your favourite things to do in your spare time?
I’m constantly working, so one of my favourite things I like to do when I’m not is spending as much time as I can with my husband and two daughters. I also love to travel, because it gives me a chance to energise and refresh, so any chance I get to do both is amazing.

What future plans do you have for your brand?
At the moment, I am working on expanding my own product line, working closely with the Care Bare brand to produce more products as well as those closer to the BeautyXtd brand. I am focused on the expansion of my companies and the Xtend Group in general, with the addition of two other brands; The Face Angel and Mane Tame.

Some tips for up-and-coming business owners or people who want to start up a label/brand?
My main tip to potential entrepreneurs is to take the leap. As long as you have a vision and a plan, everything else can be achieved with hard work.
