Life can be a ride, am I right? From breakups to makeups and everything in between, we’ve all been there and so has my friend Rod. The only difference? Rod has made some absolute bangers out of his experiences, whereas I just listen to them. (There’s a couple other differences between us too, but that’s for another time). So, here are life’s pivotal moments, perfectly defined by Rod Stewart songs.
First love – First Cut Is The Deepest
A first love, whether it be good or bad is always a significant experience and Rod nails it with ‘First Cut Is The Deepest’. Nothing more needed to say.
Lyrical example – When it comes to loving me she's the worst. I still want you by my side. Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried.
Yep, the first cut really can be the deepest.
Being cheated* on – Oh! No Not My Baby
Despite this being a pretty upbeat song don’t let it fool you. It doesn’t have to be to the extreme of being cheated on, but I do feel as though we can all relate; you’re seeing someone, you think it’s going great and then BOOM. Turns out this not-so-significant other has actually been on the sly. Even this has happened to Rod apparently, so it’s not you. It’s them.
Lyrical example - When my friends told me you had someone new, I didn't believe a single word was true. I told them all I had faith in you. I kept a-right on sayin' oh, no, not my baby, oh no, not my sweet baby.
One night stand – Stay With Me!
This one can be a bit brutal, but the truth hurts. It’s also an absolute classic tune first performed with Rod’s previous band, ‘The Faces’. The song gets straight to the point – no strings attached, one night only and please leave in the morning. Sorry, not sorry.
Lyrical example - In the morning, don't say you love me, 'cause I'll only kick you out of the door.
Post-breakup – It’s All Over Now
Breakups absolutely suck and if you need an anthem to pull you out of the post-breakup rut and stick it to the ex, here it is! Rod was clearly hurt during this era but boy, he made it out on top.
Lyrical example - She put me out, it was a pity how I cried. But the tables turned and now it's her turn to cry.
Feeling yourself – Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?
Getting ready for a night out and think you’re lookin’ alright? This is the ideal tune for when you’re feeling yourself. You’re confident, cool and ready to go. You meet someone and you’re shy, nervous conversation flows, but you really want to know - do they want your body? Do they think you’re sexy? I hope they let you know.
Lyrical example – She sits alone waiting for suggestions. He's so nervous avoiding all the questions. His lips are dry, her heart is gently pounding. Don't you just know exactly what they're thinking?
If ya want my body and ya think I’m sexy, come on sugar let me know.
Wild night out – Young Turks
If there’s ever a song to make you feel young, wild and loose, this is it. Are you in need of a wild night out? Don’t worry about biology, let yourself feel young and free. No one can hold you down, go live your life – be like Billy and Patti and let your heart be free tonight (pep talk over, thanks for listening).
Lyrical example - Young hearts gotta run free, be free, live free. Time is on, time is on your side.
There it is. Life, as told by Rod Stewart, just like I promised. Perhaps there needs to be a volume two?
