The Life Lessons You Need To Know From The World Of Rap

Uber everywhere.

By Georgie Murray | 8th October 2019

Rap music may be known for its nonsense lyrics, focus on money, ‘love-making’ and lots of near-naked bums shaking it, but sometimes, rappers also hit the nail on the head when it comes to tough life lessons and facing reality. Even 50 Cent can make sense (minus being shot).

As a fan of the genre, I have learnt many lessons (though I’m yet to abide) and today I’ll be sharing my wisdom with you, despite my parents’ disappointment.

Live solo / move into a new apartment – Ari Lennox

Sick of living with the ‘rents or housemates? Once you live solo, wave goodbye to the nagging and worrying about ‘being too messy’. Whether it be moving out for the first time or renting/buying your first apartment or house, Ari Lennox is all about it and feels you.

“Leave the dishes in the sink, do some cartwheels 'cause my furniture ain't came, standard shipping thing. I just got a new apartment and I'm gon' leave the floor wet. Walk around this bish naked.”

Get it, girl.

Be grateful – ASAP Rocky

ASAP’s collab with British Grime star Skepta is all about the gratitude. In this case, ASAP is praising ‘the lord’, but make it what you will. From his lush lifestyle, Dior glasses, career and girls, ASAP is about putting it out there and getting it back (except for breaking the law, ok).
“My shades Dior, my pants velour. Create, explore, expand, conquer. I came, I saw, I came, I saw, I praise the Lord, then break the law. I take what's mine, then take some more, It rains, it pours, it rains, it pours.”

Save your money! – Cardi B

Saving money is hard. Personally, I live out of my means and therefore the only house I’ll be buying in the near future is one from the toy section at Aldi. However, Cardi B has it down pat. Forget men, it’s all about the dollar, dollar bills and living your best life. This is especially apparent in her song rightly named ‘Money’:
‘’Nothin in this world that I like more than cheques, money. All I really wanna see is the money, I don’t really need the d, I need the money.’’ Point in case.

Always love your mum – Drake

Drake has a lot of feels and therefore a lot of handy life lessons. I could actually probably do an article just on the lessons from Drake, but perhaps another day. In this case, the lesson is to always love your mum (and your bed) first and foremost. Amen to that.

“She say, ‘do you love me? I tell her, ‘Only partly, I only love my bed and my mumma, I'm sorry’,’’.

You’ll be fine, just have a wine - Rod Stewart and ASAP Rocky

When Rod teamed-up with ASAP Rocky who would’ve thought his wisdom would transfer over. In true style, Rod painted a picture of truth and a lesson I live by multiple times a week. When you’re stuck, have a wine and wait it out.
“Every day I spend my time drinking wine, feeling fine. Waiting here to find the sign that I can understand, yes I am.’’

Uber everywhere – MadeinTYO

This one isn’t a true life lesson, (unless you’re planning on having a few drinks, then of course Uber, don’t drive). It actually goes against Cardi’s savvy saving lessons. Either way, it’s always a banger to play when you get in an Uber and guaranteed a five star rating. ‘”Uber everywhere, pre-rolls in my VIP (skrrt skrrt)
Yup I Uber everywhere, pre-rolls in my VIP.’’

Long-distance relationships – Soulja Boy

Let’s not get too into this one, it’s pretty straight forward. If you’re in a long-distance relationship, kiss ‘em through the phone.
